Description

We would like to conduct a workshop focused on strengthening civic skills for 10 young leaders from NGOs in Legnica (Lower Silesia Voivodeship). We would like to select a diverse group, holding many varying perspectives. A research from 2018 conducted by the Klon/Jawor Association has shown that almost half of the organizations operating in this area are young, which means existing for no longer than five years. During our events we talked with young representatives from different organizations around town. They have shared their needs and problems and that has been an inspiration for this project. Primarily, we would like to support young members of the NGOs due to their lack of experience and lack of support from the city. According to our observations there are no activities currently taking place in Legnica that support NGOs, especially new ones in need of support the most. Among the 10 aforementioned leaders, there will be two individuals that do not belong to any particular organization but are civically engaged. We will train the young leaders in leadership and organizational skills. We hope that the training will help create a network of leaders dedicated to developing the potential of young NGOs which will strive for better communication with the communities they serve. In collaboration with their own organizations, the leaders will activate their local communities to implement various initiatives, which will serve as a test of skills learned during the training. After the conclusion of the project, together with the participants, we will create a support network for NGOs in Legnica.

Summary of project results

We conducted workshops on strengthening civic competences for 10 young leaders from NGOs in Legnica (Dolnośląskie Voivodeship). We have selected them from different groups with diverse perspectives. Research conducted by Klon/Jawor Association in 2018 showed that many of the NGOs working in our voivodeship are young, operating no more than 5 years from the time of their registration. During the workshops, we talked to young people representing different organizations in the city. They shared their problems and needs and that’s how the idea for our project was born.We wanted to support these young people primarily due to their limited experience and lack of support from the city. According to our observations, Legnica didn’t offer any actions supporting NGOs, especially the young ones that needed it the most.We trained young leaders in organizational and leadership skills. Thanks to the training we have created a network of leaders who can develop the potential of young NGOs, now set on better communication with the public. In collaboration with their own organizations, the leaders engaged local communities into completing four initiatives as a form of a test of their newly learned skills.Self-evaluation from young leaders said they have increased their knowledge and managed to strengthen their civic activism, which will help their professional development. Additionally, six of the participants started a new association after completing our workshops. They decided to create an organization supporting other women in the civic sphere.
