Description

Reports, expert research and experience of The Kraków Multicultural Association (Stowarzyszenie Wielokulturowy Kraków) show that knowledge of Krakow''s multiculturalism remains superficial and limited. There is a shortage of attractive educational materials that reach pupils, teachers, educators, and city guides. At the same time, we are seeing an increase in aggressive and xenophobic attitudes. The project will enable educational packs to be produced and distributed, and information will also be distributed to promote the historical and contemporary multiculturalism of the city. The project will help increase Kraków residents'' knowledge of the activities of organizations and institutions working to help national, ethnic, cultural and religious minorities. In the project, there will be a podcast in 12 parts, 12 articles on blogs, and an urban literary game. Six theme-based walks will be held, two debates on the historical and contemporary multiculturalism, six webinars for young people, and six meetings on the subject of cuisine. All of the events will be open and free of charge to Kraków residents - local and foreign.

Summary of project results

The project addresses the problem of low awareness of Krakow''s cultural diversity and limited knowledge of the city''s ethnic and national diversity. Krakow has been a city of many cultures, ethnicities and religions for centuries, but public knowledge and awareness of the city''s cultural diversity is still low and rather superficial. Today, more and more foreigners live and work in Krakow. According to various estimates, there were between 15,600 and 32,200 before 2022, i.e. before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After the outbreak of the war, these numbers increased significantly. At the same time, aggressive and xenophobic attitudes have increased. The result of this situation is a superficial and distorted image of Krakow as a culturally homogeneous city, which, given the current demographic structure of Krakow, could lead to further tensions.

As part of the project, a series of educational and inclusive activities were carried out throughout Krakow. Three thematic walks, a literary city game ''Find a multicultural book'', a debate on multiculturalism and three culinary events for Krakow residents (Italian, Roma and Ukrainian cuisine) took place. A podcast and six educational webinars were also produced, which can be used as part of formal and informal education.

The project served to spread knowledge about the multicultural character of the city. It raised awareness of the impact of the cultures present in Krakow on the development of the city among the participants in the various activities. The Project Promoter was able to reach people who are not normally interested in multiculturalism. The project also increased the knowledge of Krakow''s residents about the activities of organisations and institutions working for national, ethnic, cultural and religious minorities.
