Description
Proposed project Development of technical documentation for the research area "Lipik" consists of the following activities: Development of technical documentation for geothermal energy, Transfer of knowledge and examples of good practice of the Icelandic partner, Information and visibility, Project management.
The ultimate goal and long-term strategic plan for the use of geothermal potential in the area of the City of Lipik is ultimately its combined use for energy purposes; heating of existing public buildings in the area of the City of Lipik, and then potential use of the same for the purpose of economic development, ie in greenhouses or hothouses. Also, the applicant plans to integrate the use of geothermal energy with other renewable energy sources, such as solar energy.
Investment in the implementation of the proposed project and the possibility of using the local geothermal potential for energy purposes will directly contribute to the economic and social development. The City of Lipik as a unit of local self-government that achieves savings in energy consumption through the use of renewable energy sources for heating public buildings will become an example of good energy efficiency practice that can be followed by others in the regional and national area. It will also further contribute to economic development as it will become a more interesting area for potential investors and investors who will recognize their business opportunities with reduced energy costs. This will contribute to increasing employment, reducing unemployment, reducing depopulation of this predominantly rural area, and a better entrepreneurial, economic and overall social climate in the local area.
To this end, the company Izvori Lipika d.o.o. submitted a "Proposal" to the Ministry for announcing a public tender for the selection of the most favorable bidder for geothermal water research in order to issue a permit for geothermal water in the proposed exploration area "LIPIK".
Summary of project results
Project "Development of technical documentation for the investigation area Lipik" aimed to resolve issues related to the determination of geothermal potential in the area of the city of Lipik, including determination of the size of the geothermal reservoir, analysis of reservoir features, assessment of the energy potential of the reservoir, and the possibility of using these potentials. Determining the geothermal potential is key to determining the amount of energy that can be produced, which directly affects the planning and scope of geothermal energy use in different sectors. The obtained results of the well test enable a precise assessment of the energy potential of the deposit, which is essential for optimizing exploitation and ensuring long-term sustainable use of resources. Estimating the energy power of a geothermal reservoir enables planning of its use for energy purposes; heating of existing public buildings in the area of the city of Lipik and its potential use for the purpose of economic development, i.e. in greenhouses or greenhouses, as well as in tourism.
Planning how geothermal energy will be integrated with other renewable sources such as solar energy is an important step to achieve maximum energy efficiency and diversification of energy sources. These issues are of significant importance in the context of the goals of the "Energy and Climate Change" Programme, which includes improving energy efficiency and increasing energy production from renewable sources. The use of geothermal energy can significantly contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing energy security, enabling the reduction of heating costs for public facilities and encouraging economic development through the use of renewable energy sources in the agricultural sector. Ultimately, this project can serve as a model for similar initiatives in other cities, which would further promote the use of renewable energy sources at the national level.
The activities carried out were directed in several directions, such as: preparation of technical documentation for geothermal energy, transfer of knowledge and examples of good practices of the Icelandic partner, information and visibility, and project management.
The activities of the preparation of technical documentation for geothermal energy included preparation of the documents: Analysis and processing of available geological, geochemical, geophysical, borehole data and data on the tests carried out so far on the existing well Lip-9/H in the research area "Lipik", Geothermal well project Lipik GT- 9 – hydrodynamic measurements, Elaborate on reserves, Conceptual project of development and exploitation of geothermal water and Elaborate on environmental protection.
Knowledge transfer activities and good practice examples of Icelandic partners include a study visit by Icelandic partners to Lipik in the period from 17 to 23 July 2022 and the visit of Croatian partners to Iceland in the period from November 13 to 17, 2022. The partners from Iceland presented examples of good practice at the round table held at the beginning of the project implementation during their stay in Lipik and at the final conference. In February 2024.
Information and visibility activities included holding the kick of and final project conferences where information about the project as well as the possibilities of using geothermal energy were presented to all interested participants. The kick of conference was held at the beginning of the project implementation on July 19, 2022 and the final 12.05.2024 at the end of the project implementation. At the final conference, the results of the project were presented, as well as examples of the possibility of using geothermal energy with the potential that was determined, mostly by partners from Iceland. For the purpose of promoting and disseminating news about the project to all age groups, a total of 12 promotional articles were published, of which 6 articles were published on the web portal of the local monthly Compas and 6 articles were published in the printed edition of Compas and on the Facebook page. 5 radio shows were recorded in the Radio-Daruvar radio station.
Project "Development of technical documentation for the investigation area Lipik" aimed to determine the geothermal potential in the area of the city of Lipik and to determine the possibilities of using these potentials. The goals were achieved thanks to the excellent cooperation with the Icelandic partners through the transfer of knowledge and examples of good practice of the Icelandic partner - mutual visits of partners and examples of good practice in Iceland. Determining the geothermal potential was realized through the activities of creating technical documentation for geothermal energy, which includes the creation of documents: Analysis and processing of available geological, geochemical, geophysical, borehole data, as well as data on tests carried out so far on the existing well Lip-9/H in the exploration area "Lipik" , Geothermal well project Lipik GT-9 - hydrodynamic measurements, Elaborate on reserves, Conceptual project of development and exploitation of geothermal water and Elaborate on protection environment.
Upon completion of the aforementioned documentation, it was established that there is a constant flow of water ranging from 20 to 21 l/s, with a water temperature of 68.5 to 69.5°C and a stable water level at a depth of 110 to 112 m. Thanks to a good correlation flow and dynamic water level in the well, the production possibility of 25 l/s with the installation of a pump at 160 m was estimated. The temperature increased proportionally with flow from 62.5°C to 68.5°C. According to a reliable correlation, the extrapolated temperature at an inflow of 25 l/s is expected to be over 70 °C, which is very close to the expected temperature of the formation at the center of gravity of the reservoir (75 °C).
The mentioned results have a direct impact on the target group, namely the holders and partners of the project from the area of the city of Lipik, because it also enables the planning of the use of geothermal potential for energy purposes; heating of existing public facilities in the area of the city of Lipik, and then potential use of the same for the purpose of economic development, i.e. in greenhouses, as well as in tourism. The creation of project technical documentation will result in a high degree of sustainability of public buildings through the use of geothermal energy. In addition to the City, other target groups will also benefit, such as other establishments and institutions that will have the opportunity to use energy from the mentioned renewable energy source. The results of the project will have a positive and direct impact on the economic sector, primarily the one that will be able to use the produced energy in its production process. The secondary effects of the use of geothermal energy will be reflected in an increased employment rate, a reduced unemployment rate, a reduction in the depopulation of this predominantly rural area, and a better entrepreneurial, economic and overall social climate for all residents of the city of Lipik and the surrounding area.
In addition to the significantly reduced costs that would be used for the consumption of thermal energy from fossil fuels, the use of thermal energy from geothermal sources will ensure sustainability and contribute to environmental protection, since geothermal energy is a constant source of energy that does not depend on weather conditions like energy obtained from the sun or of the wind. Also, this enables stable and reliable energy production throughout the year, which is essential for sustainable development and reducing the need for energy imports, increasing energy independence, which will contribute to the local economy. By reducing its dependence on fossil fuels, Lipik will consequently reduce emissions of CO2 and other harmful gases that contribute to global warming and ensure better air quality. This approach not only supports environmental protection goals, but also contributes to long-term economic prosperity and quality of life for all residents of Lipik and its surroundings.
