Description
Violence in youthful relationships is poorly researched and is completely "invisible" in public policies, legislation or the school system. There is no standard procedure of identification of adolescents in violent relationships or sexually abused neither a comprehensive system of tracking and keeping records in cases of violence in youthful relationships. Although both young men and women experience violence in relationships, violence in adolescent relationships is not recognised as a gender neutral problem. Considering the gender aspect of the problem, young men are more likely to approve traditional and sexist attitudes and attitudes that justify violence in certain situations. They often don''t perceive certain behaviours as violent. Fear, shame, lack of awareness, distrust and lack of relevant information and resources are the main reasons why adolescents try to resolve the problem themselves and rely on their own abilities and skills to end the violent relationship. Unfortunately, they often don''t report the violence or seek help outside the relationship. This project will contribute to the visibility of the problem and will serve as advocacy tool for an efficient and systematic prevention of violence in relationships. Key activities and expected results: legal and psychosocial support and education on gender equality to 50 students (who experienced violent relationship) from 5 counties in Slavonia; survey on gender violence in youth relationships (500 students) with awareness raising campaign, public event and published results. Slavonia region is depopulated, high unemployment and underdevelopment during the last 10 years, which further contributes to economic dependence of women and increase of economic violence by their partners. Added value of partner relates to geographical location within target region and expertise in legal aid, psychosocial support, support to victims of violence and education.
Summary of project results
Violence in relationships is a topic that is no research was conducted, and is completely "invisible" in the field of public policies, legislation and the educational system. This project is aimed at sensitizing the community about the problem of gender-based violence and violence in youth partner relationships, empowering young people in opposing gender-based violence and advocating effective systematic prevention of gender-based violence at the local and national level.
The project "Stop gender-based violence" contributed to the prevention and suppression of the incidence of gender-based violence through education in educational institutions in all 5 Slavonian counties. Through education, we made young people aware of the importance of recognizing and combating gender-based violence, teaching them that diversity is acceptable in all segments of life, starting with gender and other conditions that make individuals unique. With the project, we included young people in public advocacy activities through the design and distribution of media announcements on the recognition, awareness and prevention of gender-based violence in partner relationships, and we will create a brochure as a permanent source of information on the recognition of gender-based violence and methods of prevention of violence in partner relationships. Through a media campaign aimed at raising public awareness of the problems of gender-based violence, we contributed to the visibility of the problem, increased citizens'' awareness of gender stereotypes and norms that contribute to the tolerance of violence, provided help and support to victims of gender-based violence in the area of 5 counties in Slavonia and thereby contributed to stopping gender-based violence, and especially in the intimate relationships of young people.
