Summary of project results
“Integration of Refugee Children in Greek Schools” is a national capacity building project in Greece. Will be implemented by The European Wergeland Centre under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs.
Through the project school directors and teachers are trained to create safe and inclusive schools and classrooms where refugees are welcomed into a learning environment which aims to provide quality education to all.
The training aims to equip school directors and teachers with the tools, competence and confidence to manage controversy and deal with issues concerning intolerance, discrimination, racism and hate speech in school and the local community. Throughout the school year, school teams of school heads, teachers and parents’ representatives are trained and mentored by experienced trainers. The whole school is involved in school activities and workshops.
The main objective of the project is that refugee children are integrated in Greek schools that are safe and inclusive for all. In order to achieve this, EWC will offer training and mentoring to school directors and teachers in 150 secondary schools with refugee pupils.
The project managed to reach some main overall achievements:
Close cooperation and support on behalf of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs and IEP. The Ministry throughout the project supported us with the promotion of the yearly call for new schools and their recruitment as well as the formal approval of our projects handbook 31 Basic Activities ‘in collaboration with IEP, based on its pedagogical value and impact in the field of inclusion.
A committed pool of experienced regional trainers established and trained in the first cycle, and further expanded in the next cycles (2020-24) based on the location of the schools (45 in total)
78 secondary schools have actively participated in the project up until June 2023
46 primary schools entered our project in October 2023 and actively participated until March 2024 over 1900 teachers, parents, students and educational coordinators have been trained and actively involved in the school development projects
Better collaboration between the members of the school community (director, teachers, parents, students,
representatives of local community) and closer collaboration between schools and local addition of two more sections to the Handbook; one on the theoretical background and one with good practice examples from the schools creating an outline of a training module (for online use) that summarizes the 5-year experience with schools in Greece as well as facilitates the use of the Manual "31 Basic activities: useful educational tool for refugee reception in classrooms, schools, and communities" and can be used by educators independently to design own educational activities .
