Description

Greece is the leading player in the shipping industry in terms of fleet size and value, however it is well known that Greek shipping companies have not yet embraced the use of technology. There is a huge amount of potential value to be gained, both in terms of cost and efficiency, that is not being realized at the moment. This is due to a combination of factors – lack of education on the problem that needs to be solved, lack of awareness of the solutions that are available and lack of time to spend assessing these projects.
As leading experts in maritime technology, as well as having a significant history in the Greek maritime market, where they have established strong relationships with almost all of the major companies – Oriani is perfectly positioned to help address these issues.
By identifying companies with the right technology for the very specific Greek market, and then by leveraging their relationships to ensure that the right shipping companies send the right people to meet and see the technologies on offer – Oriani can help move more and more companies towards digitalization – which means most importantly, to take that first step and understand first-hand how technology can help develop their businesses and increase their efficiency.

Oriani will first identify the right digital solutions from the donor states, and then they will bring those solutions in Greece to present them to the Greek shipping companies in a single event.

The project aim is to increase the networking opportunities between donor state digital technology providers and the Greek shipping companies, increase the awareness of the solutions that are available, continue to educate the customers where needed and form new relationships to help these companies on their transformation journey.

Summary of project results

Greece is the leading player in the shipping industry in terms of fleet size and value, however it is well known that Greek shipping companies have not yet embraced the use of technology. There is a huge amount of potential value to be gained, both in terms of cost and efficiency (with significant environmental benefits as well), that is not being realized at the moment. This is due to a combination of factors – lack of education on the problem that needs to be solved, lack of awareness of the solutions that are available and lack of time to spend assessing these projects.
The project aim was to address these issues, and bring innovative ICT and Green technologies from Norway and Iceland to be presented to Greek maritime stakeholders.

By increasing networking opportunities between technology providers in the maritime sector from the Donor States and the Greek shipping companies, increasing the awareness of the available solutions, as well as educating the customers where needed the project will assist the Green maritime sector to become more technologically advanced, efficient, and greener.

Oriani conducted a market research for the identification of innovative technologies and digital solutions from Norway and Iceland, as well as assessed their suitability and potential interest for Greek shipping companies. Oriani held meetings with shortlisted companies in order to better understand their offering and select the final participants to be invited to Greece.

An event was organised on 13-14 March in Athens, where the selected participants from Norway and Iceland presented their solutions discussing the main issue that is addressed and the benefits for the maritime sector. The presentations were organised in different thematic sessions, with a moderated panel discussion and Q&A following the individual presentations. In total 13 companies from the Donor States (12 from Norway and 1 from Iceland) as well as 2 companies from Greece presented their solutions to 42 interested companies in the sector (maritime, Green, or ICT). In total 110 participants representing 79 companies attended the event.

The project contributed to increased knowledge on the challenges faced by the maritime sector globally, on regulatory requirements and other important developments, as well as on the available ICT/Green solutions from 15 companies that help address these issues. Therefore, participating companies will have increased knowledge and increased capacity for business development.

The project also contributed to increased collaboration between Greek companies and companies from the Donor States (namely Norway and Iceland) as Greek companies became more aware of relevant offerings from Norway/Iceland and many meetings were held during the coffee and lunch breaks of the event.
