Description

INTERGEO Environmental Technology Ltd. offers services in the field of geo-environmental projects and studies, management of hazardous waste, and in the handling of asbestos-containing materials and waste.

The project “Implementing an innovative technology to remediate hazardous waste” is an investment project, sought to supply and implement an innovative Thermal Desorption Unit in order to treat hazardous waste such as radioactive, oil and dioxin waste. This innovative technique has not yet been implemented in Greece. There are no well-developed systems to handle NORM (Naturally Occurred Radioactive Material) waste today, thus the implementation of the project could cover an untapped waste market in Greece.

The project will result in 4 new jobs created, reduction of CO2 emissions and the realization of more energy efficient waste treatment equipment. Additionally, the project will result in increased profitability and competitiveness of INTERGEO Environmental Technology in Greece.

Summary of project results

This project is addressing the issue of safe disposal of NORM (Naturally Occurred Radioactive Material) waste produced in Greece and in the wider region of the Balkans, with the supply and application of new technology for treating NORM waste.
There is currently insufficient capacity on a national level to meet the needs of the market, thus there is a strong need for investments in new technologies which would be able to handle the demanding project of remediation, recycling and safe disposal of hazardous waste produced in Greece.

This investment is thus addressed to solve environmental issues which have remained unsolved for many years, in the most eco-friendly, safe and financially effective way.

The project consisted in investing and installing an integrated system for managing sludge contaminated with petroleum products, with simultaneous recovery of hydrocarbons, using innovative technologies of centrifugation and vacuum suction. The unit for treatment of radioactive waste treats radioactive, toxic, and oil related waste.  It can be used to treat oil sludge from refinery industries and gas stations. The additional advantage of the use of the proposed device is not only the minimization of contamination risk, but also the recycling of the water and oil components of the waste, with the lowest possible energy consumption.

Following the installation of the equipment, it was connected with the electricity and natural gas networks. Then, the new system was tested by the equipment''s supplier, and hot and cold commissioning took place.

The implementation of the project will contribute to Intergeo''s sustainability as a company; it will generate long-term revenue and help it enter a new niche market with no direct competition, therefore allowing it to become a leader in the field. But the project will also promote sustainable development through the treatment of hazardous waste. The project will also have a social and environmental impact as the new technology will clean contaminated soil with no harm to the environment (even reducing CO2 emissions) and the lowest possible energy consumption.
