Description
During the last decades, the interest in patient safety has notably increased in the society, thus, the continuous improvement of competence in patient safety among the health care staff and managers is essential. This project aims to develop the hybrid curriculum of patient safety module integrating academic master’s education and continuous professional education (CPE) in nursing. This kind of integration enables to merge academic and clinical knowledge what is required in implementation and managing patient safety interventions in research and clinical practice. It is achieved by appropriate training of the teaching staff, development of the innovative teaching and learning resources (TLR), and through adding the international dimension by common training and exchange of knowledge and experience between University of Tartu (Estonia) and Nord University (Norway). Moreover, this curriculum and resources will be applicable for the undergraduate training of medical students as well for the CPE of physicians and other health professionals. Therefore, besides the development of new innovative TLRs and exchange of good practices between the project partners, this project will support the integration between higher education and employment.
Summary of project results
During this project the new hybrid curriculum of the patient safety course for master degree students was developed and for the CPE of healthcare staff entitled "Improvement of patient safety in advanced nursing: teamwork, safety culture, and patient involvement" was created. The volume of the course is 3 ECTS and it covers the following topics: the concepts of teamwork, safety culture, and patient involvement in the context of the improvement the patient safety in nursing. This course is designed to fulfil the gaps in the existing curricula of the under- and postgraduate training programs in nursing/health sciences in Estonia and in Norway as well in continuous professional training for practicing nurses in both countries. This course is using the principles of intraprofessional shared learning, the target groups are nursing master students and registered nurses (practitioners). To implement the course, the package of appropriate learning materials were developed as well the guidelines and supportive materials for the teachers. Thirdly, the assessment tool which provides the framework and tips for the teachers how to assess the achievement of learning outcomes in the shared learning process was created. Moreover, with the permission of the author the H-PEPSS (Health Professional Education in Patient Safety Survey) instrument was translated and adapted which will be used as an evaluation form to assess the students’ needs before the course as well for the evaluation their knowledge and skills after the course.
Summary of bilateral results
Some cooperation will continue already after the funding of this project has been ended. We will continue the work with the publishing of the project results but also the further validation of the H-PEPSS instrument in Estonia and in Norway. The validated instruments will be used for nursing master’s students at the entry of the program and after finishing the program. In the nearest future we will start the with the on-line lectures for the nursing master students in Estonia and in Norway provided by the core group members from Estonia and Norway.
