Description

Project objective is to use the principles and methodology of restorative justice together with the community, educational institutions and local specialists to prevent possible problems and conflicts and to resolve situations or actions that have already arisen. Through this, we make the community a safer, more tolerant and supportive place, supporting children’s law-abiding behaviour and problem-solving skills. With the project, we raise the awareness of the community in order to be able to notice conflicts and actions and react to them skilfully in order to restore the previous situation. Restorative justice adds value to everyday communication.

The project activities will result in:

    • 36 people trained in Muhu by 2024, including 24 specialists dealing with children and young people, who have knowledge of the principles of restorative justice that support the community, children and young people.
    • involving children with special needs in regular school is more effective.
    • regular discussion panels held for the community, with 100 people having participated.
    • an online platform created for sharing current topics and organising trainings.
    • In conflict situations, the primary choice for teachers at Muhu Basic School is the restorative justice approach.

Summary of project results

Project objective was to use the principles and methodology of restorative justice together with the community, educational institutions and local specialists to prevent possible problems and conflicts and to resolve situations or actions that have already arisen. Through this, to make the community of Muhu a safer, more tolerant and supportive place, supporting children’s law-abiding behaviour and problem-solving skills.

The project raised the awareness of the community in order to be able to notice conflicts and actions and react to them skilfully in order to restore the previous situation. Restorative justice adds value to everyday communication.

36 people in a community of 200, were trained on restorative justice measures and conflict mediation (6-day training cycle, 3 training groups). Most Muhu kindergarten teachers attended the training as well as school teachers, police constables, village leaders and municipality members.

Various specialists in Muhu community have acquired knowledge of the principles of restorative justice that support the community, children and young people. With informational flyers to every household in Muhu, a newspaper article in a local newspaper as well as special web-site https://taastavkogukond.muhu.ee/, the awareness of restorative methods have reached everybody in the community.

There are 10 local people trained to carry out conflict mediation as well as additional 5 people to carry out round-table discussions on conflicts emerged.

As a supportive method, Muhu Basic School has joined the "Anti-Bullying School" network, that also deals with the same topic from an alternative angle in the education system.
