Description

Project objective is to raise the awareness of Tartu child protection officials and other professionals working with children and families about restorative justice interventions, in addition to specific competencies in applying the methodology, which as a result supports the well-being of children and families and early recognition of the need for help. As a result of the project, specialists working with children and families understand the ways of thinking of restorative justice and know in which cases to use it, and are ready to apply the methodology in their work, including the case management model for dealing with young people who have committed an offense.

The project activities will result in trained child protection professionals who are case managers in their work with children and families have acquired effective skills in restorative justice intervention: conflict resolution, mediation, remedial circles, restorative consultation and effective conversation.

Summary of project results

Project objective was to raise the awareness of Tartu child protection officials and other professionals working with children and families about restorative justice interventions, in addition to specific competencies in applying the methodology, which as a result supports the well-being of children and families and early recognition of the need for help. 

The project carried out 3 x 2-day training cycle on restorative justice methods for 18 Tartu city government child protection specialists and 3 family workers. A seminar for Tartu city educational institutions was also carried out to grasp a bigger interlinkage between the educational and social sectors. 

As a result of the project, specialists working with children and families understand the ways of thinking of restorative justice and know in which cases to use it, and are ready to apply the methodology in their work, including the case management model for dealing with young people who have committed an offense. The implementation of restorative justice methods in Tartu continues via regular cross-sectoral expert group meetings, that include child protection specialists, schools'' representatives, youth centres and the police. Problems regarding youth are dealt with individually according to the case management model established in Tartu city government.
