Description

Project objective is to prevent and reduce the number of home injuries, i.e. bodily injuries caused by external factors in the home environment (incl. auxiliary buildings and the calm traffic area area). For example falls, injuries due to mechanical force, drowning and suffocation, burns, frostbite, and poisonings.

The project activities will result in creating and piloting a methodology to assess and reduce injury risks in the integrated home environment for agencies and local governments involved in reducing the risk of home safety injury risks, with special attention being paid to children up to 4 years of age, the elderly and people with special needs and the standardisation and piloting of data exchange, work processes and working equipment, between various parties.

The project will improve the awareness, ability and skills of various parties to raise the level of safety in Estonian homes and reduce the risks found in them. People’s awareness of risks, and how to avoid injuries, will also be improved.

Summary of project results

Create and pilot a methodology to assess and reduce injury risks in the integrated home environment for agencies and local governments involved in reducing the risk of home safety injury risks, with special attention being paid to children up to 4 years of age, the elderly and people with special needs as well as the standardisation and piloting of data exchange, work processes and working equipment, between various parties.

* A methodology to assess injury risks in home environment was developed for agencies and local governments involved in reducing the risk of home safety injury risks

* The check-list was piloted in 4 regions (Tartu city and Saue, Lüganuse and Muhu municipalities)

* Altogether 108 families received counselling during the piloting to reduce to level of risks in home environment.

* The check-list and piloting results were introduced to 322 specialists working in prevention (police, rescue, midwives, social work) in Tartu, Tallinn, Pärnu and web.

* Informational brochures for the elderly and families with small children were developed and distributed. Also 2 media campaigns were carried out - firstly, a 2-month campaign (TV, radio, paper, online) regarding the prevention of home injuries targeting the elderly and secondly, a 2-month campaign (TV and web media) regarding water consumption safety in home environment.

A methodological checklist for reducing risks in home environment is available. It focuses on risks of falling and fire hazards, but deals also with other risk categories. Great feedback has been received on informational materials created for the elderly and families with small children.
Rescue Board is currently dealing with taking the new check-list into standard procedures, but it also requires some database updates. Until this, the list is in voluntary use. Preventing risks in home environment is led by the Ministry of Interior, that has initiated several network meetings on the topic.
