Description

The main goal of BugBox is to develop a self-learning IT-platform with sensors, which are the core components of a fully automated mass rearing and production technology for edible insects, enabling to upscale the environmentally responsible production of insect-derived products. The aim of current Green ICT project is to develop the IT-platform and sensors which are core components of fully automating the insect mass rearing and production process.

As a result of the Green ICT project, the reactors will be fully managed by an IT-platform. All of the production data will be stored in data warehouse and used for further development and software updating purposes. The production preconditions (temperature level etc.) will be determined for each insect species. Through the self-learning IT-platform, software automatically will regulate the environment inside the reactor based on determined conditions.

BugBox’s innovative technology contributes to the mitigation of global threats, such as climate change, famine, excessive usage of resources and the negative impacts of animal farming. As the core components of BugBox’s technology will be developed as a result of the project, the Green ICT project will enable rearing of insects in larger amounts and cost-efficiently in comparison to today’s manual method. As a result, business clients are able to sell the insect-productions further to solve the pressing problem of increasing demand of nutrition.

During the main scheme project, BugBox will be in close cooperation with Prediktor Instruments AS, a Norwegian supplier of advanced analytical instruments for continuous monitoring and control of quality parameters for agriculture and industrial production processes. Prediktor Instruments is focused on innovative technology, smart thinking and industrial insight

Summary of project results

Project faced with violation during the implementation process and Norwegian partner company ceased operations, which made it difficult to obtain the necessary documents within the scope of the audit.

The following activities were successfully implemented within the project:
- cooperation with Flow-It company, to develop software architecture
- development of requirements for additional hardware and software sensor technologies
- Willingness to test and integrate the sensors of the Norwegian partner
- IT platform testing and development
- the sensors have been tested and put into operation

In addition to the activities outlined in the project plan, we have participated in the development of legislation related to Estonian edible insects in cooperation with the Estonian Insect Industry Union. Link: https://bugpro.org/seadusandlus/

Completed prototype for fully-automated edible insect mass rearing and production technology and future production.

Summary of bilateral results

Although the cooperation with the Norwegian partner Prediktor Instruments was considered successful, the Norwegian partner does not have an active business activity now, therefore the cooperation is not likely to continue.
