Description

The project “Restoration and renovation of the green infrastructure alleys of the town of Põltsamaa to alleviate the urban heat island“ is needed to reduce the effects of global warming in Põltsamaa. As global warming is already inevitable, we must consider how humans can adapt to the climate change and the accompanying heatwaves, floods, and other similar natural disasters that can be dangerous. Therefore, the best natural approach is to restore roadside alleyways, which can help to alleviate the urban heat island effects.

The objective of the project is to ensure a better climatic situation in the whole town of Põltsamaa, hence reducing the emissions of the greenhouse gases and improving the living environment. Additional to restoring the roadside alleyways, the green areas will be constructed in Põltsamaa Castle courtyard and the central square.

The outcome of the project are the roadside alleyways where people can seek ‘shelter’ from the hot weather in the shades of the trees. Furthermore, the green areas aid in flood prevention by allowing the rainfall to seep into the ground more easily during the heavy rains.

The first output of the project is the construction of nature-based landscaping with high greenery on the caste courtyard. The second output is the construction of alleys along the roads passing through the town.

Target groups: The people who will benefit from the project are the people who are either living in Põltsamaa, or just visiting it.

Summary of project results

The project addressed heatwaves, floods and other similar natural disasters that can be dangerous. In more specifics, the project was brought to life to mitigate those natural disasters'' effects. To ensure a better climatic situation in the whole town of Põltsamaa and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and also to improve the living environment.

The roadside alleyways (ca 6400 meters) are now planted with trees, green areas in the city help with flood prevention by allowing rainfall to absorb into the ground more easily during heavy rains. The courtyard of Põltsamaa castle has been made more heatwave resistant with different trees and flowerbeds which also help with rain absorbtion.

The roadside alleyways with trees makes it possible for people to seek shelter from hot weather under the trees. Green areas in general help with flood prevention by allowing the rainfall to absorb into the ground in those areas. The inhabitants of Põltsamaa and also visitors can all benefit from this.
