Description

The aim of the project is to raise the capacity of NGO Mondo in innovative education solutions in emergencies, targeting the refugee youth of 15-24 years old. In the course of the project NGO Mondo will carry out study visits to the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) education programs in Uganda and Ethiopia to assess the needs for implementing NGO Mondo digital competencies program, and to exchange experiences in monitoring and evaluation. NGO Mondo and NRC head office will also map out plans for future partnerships in digital education for the refugee youth globally.

Summary of project results

The project was needed to raise the skills of Mondo to provide innovative educational solutions for youth in crisis areas. As a result of the project Mondo carried out study visits to Norwegian Refugee Council''s (NRC''s) youth programs in Ethiopia and Uganda. Mondo humanitarian team employees visited six NRC youth centres in Uganda, in West Nile region and Kyangwali; and six refugee camps and NRC urban refugee programs in Ethiopia. As a result, separate needs assessment reports for digital skills trainings were compiled for each region.

Another result of the project was Mondo''s improved documentation and procedures on data protection. The documentation was developed for Mondo by an expert Maili Torma.

The impact of the study visits is that Mondo and NRC Uganda are interested in carrying out digital skills trainings in partnership. Mondo and NRC Uganda have submitted funding proposals to start digital skills training for refugee youth in the West Nile region. At the time of this report, we are waiting for a funding response from Estonian Foreign Ministry. Throughout the project regular online meetings were held between Mondo team and NRC Head Quaters. Mondo has a good understanding of how NRC works globally, including the way NRC plans their monitoring and evaluation activities.

The results of the project will be sustained through Mondo''s strategic interest in building upon the partnership with NRC. Additionally, Mondo has opened its office in Uganda with two employed staff members on the ground. Mondo''s Uganda office contributes to maintenance of partnership with NRC Uganda office.

Summary of bilateral results

Partnership with Norwegian Refugee Council was a crucial and cross cutting element of the project. Engagement of NRC was essential to enable Mondo to access the target groups - the refugee youth in Uganda and Ethiopia. Prior to the project Mondo had developed a unique digital competencies program and Mondo had an interest to scale it up to a larger number of beneficiaries, the refugee youth. Partnership with Norwegian Refugee Council within the project enabled Mondo to develop our understanding of the needs of the refugee youth in Uganda and Ethiopia; and to understand how NRC globally works, and how to build a partnership with them strategically. As a result of the project we have submitted shared funding proposals with NRC Uganda to start digital skills trainings together for the refugee youth in Uganda.
