Description

The objective of this project is to analyze the Czech railways and locate areas where hydrogen train technology would be a preferred technical, economic and environmental solution compared with other train technologies. This study will examine and collect initial data especially from the non-electrified railways where diesel train are operated. Through the methodology and software developed by SINTEF, the analysis will generate techno-economic analyses and make a comparison ranking of train technologies solution between diesel, battery, hydrogen and hybrid trains. The results will allow to identify preferred areas with a beneficial techno, economic and environmental outcome by deploying low-emission trains for replacing future decommissioned diesel trains on non-electrified railway.

Summary of project results

The project aimed to address the environmental impact of diesel trains on non-electrified railway lines in the Czech Republic. The objective of this project was to analyze the Czech railways and locate areas where hydrogen train technology would be a preferred technical, economic and environmental solution compared with other train technologies.

The project analyzed Czech railways to identify areas where hydrogen trains would be a better solution than diesel, battery, or hybrid trains. It developed a methodology for selecting suitable routes, conducted techno-economic analyses, and produced a final feasibility study with recommendations.

The project identified preferred areas for implementing hydrogen train technology, providing a roadmap for decarbonizing the Czech railway network. The primary beneficiaries are the Czech railway authorities and operators, along with the Czech public who will benefit from cleaner air.

Summary of bilateral results

The bilateral collaboration has been highly beneficial, with data shared and used in models by the Norwegian partner, expanding the model''s application internationally, while all results is bilaral (except the video). Both sides plan to continue cooperation through international projects, including a new techno-economic analysis of Czech/German cross-border lines, with ongoing intensive contact and strong collaboration.
