Description

The main aim of the project “Media literacy interactively and for all” is the development of media literacy among particularly vulnerable target groups of students aged 15 - 19 and seniors aged 65+.

The target groups of the project are vulnerable due to their high use of technology combined with yet developing critical thinking (case of students) and underdeveloped skills for safe and effective working in the online environment.

The aim will be achieved by developing and distributing two interactive massive open online courses (one per target group). Each course, didactically adapted for the particular target group, will cover subjects such as critical thinking subjects, new and old media, or fact-checking. The course will be distributed via partners consisting of various institutional actors involved in education (high schools, libraries, youth organizations, e-senior platforms) selected particularly from structurally excluded regions with low scores of media literacy. Distribution will be aided by workshops with partners'' educators and the development of an escape game designed to increase the project''s visibility. On a general level, the project will contribute to intergenerational learning, resilience to cyber threats and goals CR singed for in the areas of cybersecurity (e.g., education, tech sovereignty, international cooperation). The project team consists of an expert on ICT, media literacy and sociology from prominent Czech universities.

Summary of project results

In the area of media literacy, people aged 15 to 29 and people over 60 are vulnerable groups. The project focused on a group of vocational high school students and a group of seniors involved in the Virtual University of the Third Age at CZU. It was possible to involve both groups through channels that were easily accessible to the groups. During the implementation of the project, the main issues were the timetable and the different ways secondary schools operate.

As part of the project, the expert team designed, compiled and content-filled learning materials for target groups (Massive open online course (MOOC) course for seniors, MOOC course for secondary schools and Escape game). The materials were subsequently moved to the Future Books environment, an environment for interactive online learning materials. A detailed methodology has been created for each material, which allows teachers or education coordinators to easily implement it in the given environment. All teaching materials were evaluated at selected secondary schools and VU3V centers (with a focus on regions in the Liberec, Ústí and Karlovy Vary Regions). Subsequently, videos of intergenerational education were created. As part of the promotion of the outputs, the project was presented at several Czech and foreign events. There was also an online seminar with a Norwegian partner.

As part of the project, a total of 8 educational materials were created (a course for seniors and secondary schools, both including methodology, an escape game with methodology, and two intergenerational education videos). In addition, an online version of the escape game was created, which was not part of the original plan. The outputs were promoted and presented at 9 events, and the total number of people involved in the activities significantly exceeded the planned number (1,295 people). The total number of people at the end of the project was 1,743. The main goal of the project was to increase the level of media literacy in the target groups by improving media literacy education through didactically current and interactive tools. Achieving this goal led to secondary objectives of developing resilience against digital external, internal, individual, and societal threats. The outputs were created as reusable materials, so they can serve as teaching resources for future years as well. As part of the implementation, the expert team deepened their knowledge of the educational methods for each target group (for example, one team member became a certified senior educator). At the same time, representatives of the project team established closer contact with experts on media literacy in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Summary of bilateral results

The partnership significantly increased the efficiency of the work on the outputs and also allowed for the creation of outputs of better quality. The partners from the Faculty of Education at Charles University brought knowledge of educating secondary school students and the possibility of using the Future Books system. This was successfully integrated with our experience in educating students at vocational secondary schools, gamification in education, and senior education. As a result of the partnership, the outputs could be presented both to the professional library community and to secondary school teachers. The collaboration with the Norwegian partner provided the opportunity to gain insight into a similar field abroad and adapt some of the outputs for use outside the Czech Republic. The collaboration in the form of an online webinar took place approximately halfway through the project implementation, which allowed us to exchange information at a stage when it was possible to adapt the project outputs based on experiences and good practices from abroad. Part of the project outputs was translated into English and sent to the Norwegian partner.
