Description
The subject of the project is the construction of a new water reservoir - a pond, the construction of a windbreak and the planting of new greenery in the new location for Padělka''s housing. The project is a targeted follow-up to the approved Climate Change Adaptation Strategy of the Podluží Region, the creation of which was supported by Norway Grants - the SGS-3 Oslo call. It is therefore a practical example of the municipality''s strategic approach in implemented adaptation measures. The project addresses the issue of reducing the risk of the negative impact of high temperatures, the heat island and heat waves on the health of residents; prevention and reduction of the impacts of extreme hydrological phenomena – torrential rains, floods and droughts, both in open countryside and in built-up areas.
Summary of project results
In our community of Kostice in Southern Moravia, the construction of windbreaks and a new water reservoir is vital in addressing climate change. This project directly aligns with the approved Adaptation Strategy for the Podluží Region, which was developed with the support of Norway Grants through the call SGS-3 Oslo. It serves as a practical example of our strategic approach to implementing adaptation measures. The project targets climate change impacts by fostering a coordinated response to the challenges posed by shifting climatic conditions in our area. Local implementation of these measures is crucial, as our municipality is affected by climate change due to population concentration, economic activities, and negative ecological phenomena, such as air pollution, increased noise, and resource depletion. Additionally, the project addresses the reduction of risks associated with high temperatures, urban heat islands, and heatwaves on residents'' health, while also focusing on the prevention and mitigation of extreme hydrological events, including heavy rains, floods, and droughts in both rural and urban environments.
New water reservoir serves a crucial role in water retention in the landscape and protection against drought and floods, supports biodiversity and allows for extensive fish farming. In addition to its ecological functions, recreational use is also anticipated, so facilities are planned, including a swimming pier, floating islands, and walking paths. Emphasis is placed on protecting surrounding biotopes and a sensitive approach to the natural character of the area; therefore, the implementation is planned in gradual phases, allowing for responses to visitor needs without disturbing the natural environment.
Improving climatic conditions in the municipality of Kostice and the entire Podluží Region is a fundamental goal that directly impacts the quality of life for our residents. Through the implementation of the project to construct windbreaks and a new water reservoir, we aim to revitalize the local environment, leading to better microclimate, reduced temperature extremes, and enhanced biodiversity. This will increase the living comfort for residents, who will have the opportunity to utilize the newly created natural areas for relaxation and recreation.
Additional measures focused on water management and greenery will follow this project. These steps will help mitigate the impacts of climate change in the area, such as improving water retention in the landscape, which will aid in preventing flooding and droughts. Green areas and trees will also act as natural filters, improving air quality and contributing to a healthier living environment. All these activities will be coordinated to ensure sustainable development and long-term improvements in living conditions for our residents. We believe that through these initiatives, our region will become more resilient to climate challenges and provide residents with a more pleasant and healthier environment for living.
