Description

According to climate models, negative phenomena such as drought, heat waves, extreme torrential rains and flash floods can be expected in the Central European region.  The aim of the project is to create an adaptation strategy for the municipality of Vranov and thus reduce the negative impacts of this change on its inhabitants. Part of the creation of the strategy will be a detailed analysis of the risks of the territory, on the basis of which a system of effective measures will be created.

Summary of project results

According to climate models, negative phenomena such as drought, heat waves, extreme torrential rains and flash floods can be expected in the Central European region. The higher intensity of climatic extremes is evident from data from recent years and we also perceive in our village that extreme weather fluctuations have a negative impact not only on the surrounding nature, but the impacts must also be borne by the inhabitants. As part of our project, we have therefore decided to create our local adaptation strategy, which will propose measures aimed at reducing the negative impact of these phenomena on the lives of the inhabitants of Vranov. In order to develop an effective adaptation strategy, it was necessary to carry out a risk analysis at the beginning, which made it possible to identify the heat islands in the city and correlate them with socio-economic and demographic statistics, the state of greenery and other indicators. As a basis, a set of maps was created that monitor soil erosion, water accumulation or the state of vegetation in the cadastre of the village. Identified risks that occur across the monitored areas include, for example, a decrease in groundwater levels and related conflicts of interest between environmental protection and water consumers, the spread of invasive species, deterioration of overall ecological stability of forests or reduced agricultural production due to higher soil erosion. the spread of hitherto atypical pests or lack of irrigation for agriculture.

This risk analysis was a fundamental basis for the creation of an effective adaptation strategy, which includes targeted measures leading to a reduction in the negative impacts of climate change on the municipality and to greater responsibility of Vranov in terms of climate protection. Part of the adaptation strategy is an action plan, which brings proposals for specific measures in Vranov. This includes, for example, planting greenery in selected localities in the village and building a green roof at the local kindergarten. Greenery will be expanded in undeveloped areas, where we plan, for example, to supplement the surrounding pastures with new draws and solitary trees, which will allow us to reduce the risk of erosion and, conversely, strengthen local biodiversity.
