Description

The aim of the project is extension of population highly endangered amphibians a reptiles living at the Hartecká Path and surroundings by creating new biotopes for their reproduction.

Summary of project results

Among reptiles and amphibians, many species are sensitive to changes in their environment - loss of natural habitats, landscape fragmentation, or climate change all threaten biodiversity. By creating new habitats that provide suitable conditions for amphibians and reptiles, we can help these species survive and thrive despite adverse impacts on their populations. It is crucial to recognize that reptiles and amphibians play a significant ecological role in our natural environment. They are natural predators of insects and other invertebrates and serve as prey for other animals. Their loss or population decline could have unpredictable consequences for entire ecosystems, including changes in the composition of plant and animal communities. The goal of our project was to improve living conditions for reptiles and amphibians within the Hartecká stezka natural garden area.

During the project, we focused primarily on four selected endangered species that already inhabited parts of the Hartecká stezka before the project implementation: common lizard, slow worm, common toad, and common newt. We constructed two new ponds for newts and toads, and for lizards and slow worms, we created a 200-meter-long stacked sandstone wall to provide them with safe shelter. Additionally, we installed four informational panels about these endangered species of amphibians and reptiles to educate visitors about these species and the importance of their conservation on the Hartecká stezka.

Thanks to the project, we successfully created new habitats for critically endangered species of amphibians and reptiles, which will help maintain and expand their populations in the area. The project also contributes to climate change mitigation by retaining water in the landscape, supports biodiversity enhancement, and effectively prevents soil erosion through the new sandstone wall.

Hartecká stezka is also a popular destination for recreational activities and environmental education programs focused on conservation. It offers visitors the opportunity not only to experience the beauty of nature but also to learn about the unique plant and animal species living there. Through these educational activities, the project helps raise awareness about the issues facing endangered species.
