Description

According to climatic models, the Central Europe region is expected to increase negative phenomena such as drought, heat waves, extreme torrential rainfall and lightning floods. Higher intensity of climatic extremes is apparent from data from recent years. The adaptation measures are to reduce the negative impact of these phenomena on the lives of the inhabitants of Kuřim and the surrounding municipalities. To develop an effective adaptation strategy, a risk analysis must be carried out at the outset to identify the thermal islands in the city and correlate them with socio-economic and demographic statistics, green status and other indicators. This risk analysis will be a fundamental basis for the development of an effective adaptation strategy, which will include targeted measures to reduce the negative impacts of climate change on the city as well as greater responsibilities for Kuřim and the surrounding municipalities for climate protection.

Summary of project results

In the region of Central Europe, according to climate models, an increase in negative phenomena associated with climate change can be expected, such as the prolongation of the dry season, waves of high summer temperatures, extreme torrential rainfall and related flash floods, etc. The higher intensity of climatic extremes is already evident from data from recent years. Adaptation strategies make it possible to eliminate the negative impacts of climate change on municipalities and their inhabitants. For this reason, the municipalities of our Kuřimsko region have decided to take advantage of the Call providing funding from the financial mechanism of the Norway Grants, analyze our territory and develop an effective adaptation strategy that will include proposals for appropriate measures and lead the city and its surroundings to greater responsibility in climate change adaptation and mitigation. Successful adaptation to climate change will lead to lower threats to people and nature and higher resistance to adverse events. At the same time, the quality of life, the environment, the safety of residents, and the economic and social development of our municipalities will not be threatened.

As part of the analysis of our territory, we monitored the vulnerability of individual parts to heat waves, drought and flash floods. From the data obtained, it follows that, from the point of view of high temperatures, urban housing estates in Kuřimi, where there is a high proportion of buildings, are among the most endangered places. Torrential rains, on the other hand, can be a problem for the area around the Mozovské brook and also for part of the industrial area near the Kuřimka watercourse. Based on the analysis of the territory, we proposed a set of measures and also an action plan, which we would like to implement in the following years. Among the proposed measures, we included, for example, the restoration of cherry tree alleys around roads, the revitalization of water reservoirs and watercourses, the reconstruction of parking spaces on areas with a permeable surface, the purchase of a municipal electric car, the establishment of community gardens, or the establishment and revitalization of greenery in municipalities and the surrounding area.

For communication purposes, we have created the Modrozelené Kuřimsko information website, where visitors can find out all the latest news about our activities.
