Description

The number of tropical days in the year is increasing, followed by heavy torrential rains, followed by long periods of drought. These extreme fluctuations need to be addressed and the landscape and communities adapted to be able to deal with them effectively. The aim of the project is to create an adaptation strategy for the area falling under the Kostelecko microregion. The main benefit of the project proposal is the definition and commitment of the long-term strategic approach and the identification of measures that the project promotor will implement in the context of climate change at the local level.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project was to create an adaptation strategy document for the Kostelecko Microregion, where we also perceive the negative effects of climate change, which have an impact on the environment and our inhabitants. The number of tropical days in the year is increasing, followed by heavy torrential rains, followed by long periods of drought. These extreme fluctuations need to be addressed and the landscape and communities adapted to be able to deal with them effectively. We have developed an adaptation strategy, which sets out a long-term strategic approach to this topic, for 13 of our municipalities, and the implementation of the proposed measures may positively affect at least 12,800 people who have permanent residence here. The Kostelecko microregion includes the municipalities of Bílovice-Lutotín, Čechy pod Kosířem, Čelechovice na Hané, Hluchov, Kostelec na Hané, Laškov, Lešany, Pěnčín, Přemyslovice, Ptení, Smržice, Stařechovice and Zdětín.

We presented our strategy and proposed measures symbolically in the new park in Čelechovice na Hané, which the municipality recultivated on the site of the former sugar factory. The inhabitants of Kostelec had the opportunity to personally view the exhibited maps of draft measures in the municipalities of the micro-region, as well as models of temperature development and discuss with us and our partners about the document and its future use. Petr Sedlák from the partner organization Paměť krajiny presented the adaptation strategy to our visitors in the position of an expert on the open landscape. According to him, it is important to start creating measures as soon as possible, because the desired effect of the newly established landscape elements will not come immediately. As he explained to our guests, these are measures in the countryside that will take effect in 5 to 10 years. The average annual temperature in our country is rising, and if we do not actively create measures, the landscape will not be the character of a mixed temperate forest, but rather will begin to resemble a steppe. As is the case today in Kazakhstan, for example.

Summary of bilateral results

Thanks to the involvement of a bilateral partner in our project, we had the opportunity to share experiences with the issue of adaptation to climate change from foreign regions.
