Description

The aim of the project is to create an adaptation strategy for the territory falling under the Voluntary Union of Municipalities of the Clean South-East. The strategic goal of the project is to maintain and reduce in a timely manner the vulnerability of systems and increase their resilience to direct and indirect impacts of climate change, without compromising the quality of the environment, the safety of the population and the economic and social potential of society.

Summary of project results

The territory of the municipalities that are members of the Voluntary Association of Clean Southeast Municipalities is a traditional wine-growing area that perceives the effects of climate change very strongly in terms of its impact on local production. Among the most significant risks we see in relation to climate change are our water scarcity and soil degradation. Our goal was to create an adaptation strategy that will allow us to actively mitigate climate change and adapt to its effects so as to maintain living standards and the sustainable development of the local economy. Without an adequate, high-quality and well-designed adaptation strategy, negative manifestations will continue without an appropriate response from municipalities and regions. The main benefit of the project is the definition and adoption of a long-term strategic approach and the identification of measures that we will implement in connection with climate change in the territory of the participating municipalities. The strategic goal of the project to be achieved is to maintain and reduce in a timely manner the vulnerability of systems (natural and socio-economic) and increase their resilience to direct and indirect impacts of climate change without compromising the quality of the environment, population safety and economic and social development potential.

The adaptation strategy defines the current situation for the eleven municipalities involved, monitors their opportunities and risk factors. Part of the created adaptation strategy is also an action plan, which represents measures applicable to our territory. Proposed measures for adaptation to climate change in our municipalities include, for example, trumpeting of previously piped watercourses, accumulation and subsequent use of rainwater in municipalities, ensuring the operation of emergency water resources for droughts, implementing measures against wind erosion or supporting changes in forest composition closer to native species.

Other activities will also include awareness-raising tools that will bring the issue of climate change and its effects closer to our citizens. DSO Clean Southeast is preparing to join the Covenant of Mayors for Sustainable Energy and Climate.
