Description

Importance of healthy diet during the Covid-19 period that we have been going through is emphasised by all scientists. Teachers have also realised that there is a crucial relationship between nutrition, well-being and health of their students. We believe it is important to tackle problems from the roots. What is a better way than to let students understand how important their healthy lifestyle is?
The essential part of the project is a mutual partner school visit during which the students can get to know their foreign counterparts and discover a different environment, way of life and get to know a new food culture. The old traditional and healthy recipes will be revived and the pupils will have an opportunity to cook and taste traditional healthy food. We also put emphasis on the socially disadvantaged students'' integration into the project work. Therefore, these will be preferentially included in the project activities and mobility stays. We believe that participation in the project will broaden their horizons and raise their confidence.
We hope that participation in the mobilities will help both Czech and Icelandic students to get and maintain a positive attitude towards eating healthy and local farm food, that they will gain knowledge of the endeavour of local family farms to produce environmentally sustainable and healthy foodstuff. They will also realise how eating habits can influence their health.

Summary of project results

Young people are becoming increasingly unaware of where their food originates and how it makes its way from ‘field to table’. At the same time, they are under pressure of exam results and often consume diets rich in fat and sugar. As a result, they struggle with obesity and various health problems. This project was designed to help understand students of both partner schools the importance of eating healthy food with regard of promoting the consumption of locally grown products and preserving local food culture. Students and teachers from both countries visited each other during the work on the project in order to get to know the eating habits and culture of their partners and work on the jointly made final product of this cooperation – a brochure on healthy and traditional food. Health education is formally a part of a school curriculum but not much time is spent on it. Therefore, introducing the brochure as teaching stuff in lessons of English as well as during health education lessons can liven up the lessons and make students interested in healthy dishes. The work on the brochure enriched students with these competences – collecting and processing data, making research, making videos and presentations, making questionnaires. Communication using English was an integral part of the project therefore students improved their language competences as well. Thanks to the project, students and teachers from both countries have established friendships and are in touch through social media. Further collaboration is planned in the form of job shadowing. It can be assumed that our common website will be used for further posting of articles related to healthy eating and will lead in the long term to mutual enrichment of both countries.

Summary of bilateral results

Having a donor project partner from Iceland added prestige to our school as it is not very common to establish cooperation with a Scandinavian country in our town. This bilateral partnership gave us the opportunity to exchange experiences not only in the field of healthy eating but also of teaching methods with a strong emphasis on using information and communication technology. The Snaefellsnes Upper Secondary School offers a diverse choice of studies in a small rural school environment, the school provides education for gifted students as well as students with disabilities and specific needs. The methodology is focused on the needs of the individual student and provides nontraditional models for learning. The opportunity to learn about new approaches to teaching is the theme of our future cooperation. We plan to stay in touch and take part in job shadowing programme.
