Description

The aim of this project is to strengthen international cooperation and knowledge exchange in the field of multi-scale modelling of materials and also to develop collaborative work on material research between the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Brno University of Technology (Czechia) on one side and the Nanomechanical lab at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Norway) on the other . The planned project time period is 24 months, from the 1st of August, 2021 until the 31st of July, 2023. The main project objective is to improve knowledge and experience in multi-scale modelling of materials (including ab initio and molecular dynamics simulations) in both groups as well as evolve collaborative work on the topic selected by the Norwegian project partner.  Emphasis will be given to knowledge transfer to master and PhD students in the form of new e-learning courses and to  inclusion of PhD students and young university staff in the shared scientific research.

Summary of project results

The partner universities educate students and perform scientific research in the field of atomistic modelling of materials. Working in this field requires extensive knowledge of work at supercomputers, Linux environment, solid state physics, and more importantly experience in ab initio (first principles) and molecular dynamics simulations. As ab initio methods are extensively used in the research group of the applicant and molecular dynamics simulations are heavily performed in the NO partner group, it was mutually advantageous to exchange experience in these fields. The exchange of experience will significantly increase the quality of education and scientific research in both partner institutions.

During the two visits between the partners we not only exchanged knowledge in atomistic simulations but also attended several group seminars and discussed recent topics in research and education. The workshops organized at the applicant’s institution also attracted interested colleagues from other CZ institutions. The online lectures available on the website eniac.fme.vutbr.cz. The online lectures will serve as a database of knowledge and experience in atomistic simulations (both ab initio and molecular dynamics) for future students and employees at both institutions. In addition, these materials have been implemented as supporting materials for students in two courses at the applicant’s institution.

Thanks to this project we were able to organise many meetings, mutual visits with the project partners in CZ and NO and also prepare the online tutorials reflecting requirements of our students and university staff for atomistic simulations. Both partners will also continue in cooperation after the project period.

Summary of bilateral results

The project successfully accomplished these main goals: strengthen cooperation between both institutions, significantly increased knowledge (expertise) exchange in the field of atomistic simulations, and provide an opportunity for networking (a Ph.D. student arranges his stay at the partner institution during the workshop organised in 2022). The cooperation with our partner will definitely continue.
