Description
The project Káznice LIVE by Tripitaka focuses on the revival of the cultural monument of the former Káznice (Prison) in Brno.
This monument with a turbulent history is currently in a dilapidated condition. The association has a leased part of the building, which can still be used for cultural and community purposes. Although there is a long-term plan to transform the property into a creative center, neither the city of Brno, nor the South Moravia initiates the transformation of the building, no pre-negotiated financial resources are linked.
The long-term intention of the association is, in cooperation with Brno, to restore the place''s dignity, bring the history of the place closer to the public and create a unique creative center in the center of Brno, which will inspire the place with a new mission. The project thus builds on the activities of the association and expands the existing activities and efforts of the association to save the place and revive it.
Through activities, which focus on the completion of selected rooms, architectural competition of partial places in Káznice, small and large cultural activities, residencies for artists and educational activities, Tripitaka plans to revitalize the space, bringing its history closer to local communities and partners.
We will collaborate on the project with Hild Borchgrevink and TIC. Partnership with both subjects is tied through all activities. Norweigan artists will participate in experience exchange or residence stay. TIC will participate in culture management and marketing. We will also work with local communities, people living in the excluded locality, Roma, artists and friendly organizations.
The aim of the project is to contribute within 2 years to the development and professionalization of existing cultural activities in the Káznice area in Brno, to initiate steps to save this property and to transform it into Creative Center.
Summary of project results
Thanks to the project, the dilapidated cultural monument of the 250-year-old former Baroque prison on Brno''s Cejl Street was significantly revived. This has created a lively space for culture and socially beneficial projects in the heart of a socially excluded locality where up to 5 000 Roma live. The challenge was to convince the community and the city, as the owner of the building, that this way of using the Káznice is the right and meaningful way.
Thanks to 54 cultural events, over 12,000 visitors visited Káznice in 2 years, which exceeded expectations. A vibrant, creative community has emerged and a professional team ready to continue the journey. 8 resident artists from Peru to Ukraine have spread the word about Káznice abroad. Based on the positive experience with the project, the city of Brno, the owner of the building, decided to lend us another part of Káznice.
The project was closely linked to the overall objectives of the programme. The dilapidated and listed former penitentiary building proved to be a suitable object for the development of cultural entrepreneurship and cultural heritage in the middle of a socially excluded locality. The successful implementation of the project confirmed the sensibility of the programme and showed a sensible way of dealing with disused cultural monuments in the Czech Republic
