Description
The aim of the project: to make the movable cultural heritage accessible for the public through digitisation and interactive on-line tools, and through this, to strengthen the administration and entrepreneurship in the field of culture.
Olomouc Museum of Art in cooperation with the partners Moravian Library and National Archives of Iceland administrates works of art of various artistic value. The extraordinary valuable and the most endangered by degradation are the works on paper. That is what makes them long-term inaccessible for the public. This project will make them accessible through on-line tools and educational activities. Digitisation will remove the access barrier within Czech Rep. and on international level, too (especially for researchers, disabled people). Conservation care will be secured, too. Overall, there will be 83 600 works of art and book titles digitalised, which means 1 177 200 digital images / scans.
During the realisation, there will be 2 workshops held for conservators and restorers and 3 workshops/course for the digitisation administrators. Furthermore, a final conference for professionals from memory institutions will take place, 2 workshops for teachers and 24 education programmes for pupils. Moreover, there will be 4 workshops held for the public, 12 concerts, 18 workshops, 3 debate panels and 5 lectures. There will be cooperation running with designers, craft companies and regional entrepreneurs. Thanks to the project, new business activities and new jobs will develop.
Partnership with Moravian Library, Library of the Czech Academy of Sciences and National Archives Iceland guarantees the know-how of digitisation processes and presentation of digitalised copies. The relationships between Czech Republic and the donor country will be strengthened, and a new network of contacts enabling further common projects will be created, too.
Summary of project results
The aim of the project was to digitise the artworks (mainly works on paper) of the applicant and partners (except of the Library of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic) and present them to the professional and general public using online tools (collection portal, digital library, INDIHU Exhibition) and educational activities (e.g. concerts, workshops). The biggest challenge was the lack of experience with digitization, which we overcame through sharing experiences with partners.
The project focused on 4 areas, namely:
- restoration/preservation of the artworks (all objects have undergone the intervention of a restorer/conservator before digitization, which will contribute to more effective preservation of the works)
- digitisation of artworks and their presentation on the online portals
- development of the INDIHU Exhibition tool and creation of virtual exhibitions
- educational activities for the general and professional public, including a conference
All activities contributed to the fulfilment of the project objectives: to make selected artworks of the Olomouc Museum of Art, The Moravian Library in Brno and National Archives of Iceland accessible to the public through their digitization, educational activities for target groups, to strengthen the protection of the collections, to emphasize their significance and uniqueness and to increase the potential of their economic use. Individual activities ensured the preservation of artworks, their digitisation and subsequent creative use in educational activities.
The project has digitised 84,792 artworks, removing barriers to access to works of art for the general public through presentation on 3 online portals and through the implementation of educational programmes (concerts (10), talks (1), workshops (47)) and the professional public (direct teaching (26), workshops (6), seminars (1), conferences (1)). A total of 92 events for professionals (199) and the public (3,337) were held. The unintended effect was high attendance and a larger number of events.
The digitization of the objects allowed to expand museum´s portfolio by offering activities working with digitals (e.g. concerts, ws) and online tools (e.g. exhibitions in INDIHU Exhibition). The cooperation with local, regional and international organizations was deepened. The project contributes to the development of business activities through the use of digitals for design, PR.
Summary of bilateral results
The partnership with National Archives of Iceland (Reykjavik, Iceland) was important as it brought together partners with experience in different areas (digitisation, restoration, education, creation of online tools) and the transfer of these experiences to each other. Two visits took place in the framework of the partnership. During the first visit, employees of the Olomouc Museum of Art and The Moravian Library visited the partner National Archives of Iceland, where they learned about the process of preservation and digitization of paper collections. The partner provided information about the digitization workplace and workflow. It also included a tour of the Reykjavik Art Museum focusing on working with visitors and audiences and the Arni Magnusson Institute focusing on manuscript digitisation. The partner visited the Olomouc Museum of Art for a tour of the digitisation workplace where manuscripts, old prints and other valuable paper collections were digitised and to transfer experience in this field. The partner''s staff also got acquainted with educational activities implemented through a mobile application and workshops. The partners will further develop their activities aimed primarily at creative use of digitized materials and transfer of experience in the field of museum education for different types of visitors.
