Description

The project focuses on connecting art critics with the audience and the filmmakers. The purpose of the project and its activities is strengthing the audiovisual criticism and connecting criticism with fimmakers and viewers through lectures, workshops and involving the critics in festival practice. The main focus point of the project is the audiovisual art in its broadest definition. The primary purpose of the project is the development of art criticism of the 21st century. We would like to achieve this by organising a set of workshops, lectures and discussions as well as through our original programme connecting the festival practice with art criticism. The project will be presented online on our website and social media through articles and audiovisual outputs The project is the result of the cooperation between two international festivals, Young Film Fest in Brno (devoted to young viewers) and the International Documentary Film Festival ELBE DOCK in Ústí nad Labem, a regional festival in Litoměřice as well as the DOX Centre of Contemporary Art.

Summary of project results

The problem with contemporary art criticism is primarily that it has ceased to exist in its original
form. The disappearance of film criticism is a symptom of the times. The project faced a number of
covid limitations, which we managed to effectively move to the online world. It turned out that film
criticism programs are in great demand among students, but at the same time students are
challenged to complete their texts qualitatively and novice critics are not used to working with
editing texts.

The project implemented an activity to strengthen the implementation team of 10 people. 16 audiovisual
recordings, 38 textual outputs of beginning students of film criticism, 47 students
participated, 2905 students participated in the activities. 16 audiovisual projects and 10 textual
outputs of students of the year-long programme of beginning - advanced students of film criticism
were selected and presented. These activities were important due to the general support of film
critics, especially with regard to regional activities outside Prague. Overall, a number of new careers
as film critics were launched.

The aim of the project was to change the mind-set of art criticism, which is often oriented without
reference to other art forms. Informing the public about the possibilities of new attitudes, changing
the common discourse with artists about thinking about art. The website was visited by 45,272
unique visitors - readers. The overall impact can be expected in strengthening institutions and
freelancers as well as general education in art criticism for the wider public.
