Description

The project will contribute to the development of music criticism focused on the alternative or independent music scene and strengthen its inspirational and motivational role reflecting in creators of this culture - artists, bands, but also organizers, clubs, other music professionals and journalists and the public. The aim of the professionalization of the editorial board of the AlterEcho platform will be to regularly and effectively cover music events - especially its non-traditional form, and to seek ways of understanding contemporary music art. Essentially related to this is the offering of space for discussion both in the online environment and in the comfortable space of a community center or club where a personal meeting takes place.

In one year we will double the volume of published texts, focusing more on authorial journalism like interviews and reports, commentaries and articles reflecting young Czech (or Slovak) production. We will organize a total of six events with the Brno partner institutions within the project. Three workshops of electronic music for children aged 8-15 will be organized with the autonomous, cultural and social center Sibiř. We will also cooperate with the independent club Bajkazyl Brno at the music and discussion evening HLUK (“Noise”), where music critics, organizers and other guests - especially from the independent scene - will meet to share experiences together and with the public. There will be a music program under the curatorship of the AlterEcho platform as well.

Summary of project results

The purpose of the project was to strengthen the role of journalism dedicated to the alternative
music and to set the conditions for the existence of such a focused media with sufficient funding.
The biggest challenge was the determination of the volume of outputs and the scope of
implementation with regard to the time schedule and budget. Cultural projects are often
implemented in a relatively high quantity, set by the low value of work in the cultural sphere from
the financial point of view.

The main purpose of the project was to create a team of publishers that will work more regularly on
arctiles reflecting both the live music scene and emerging art projects. Another integral part was the
support of the activities of other actors in the alternative and independent scene (labels, small
promoters, artists themselves, etc.) in the form of shorter invitations, video tips, but also reports
and photo galleries covering events. Especially in the reviews and photographic outputs the authors
come up with their specific point of view on realized artistic projects and events. Such a cultural and
artistic dialogue is very important for the development and spread of artistic activities within
society, especially since there are very few media focused on music in general in the Czech Republic.
Other accompanying activities such as discussion evenings with a musical program also tried to
contribute to the reflection of music journalism itself as seen by its authors and publishers.

Final beneficiary had published 458 articles and photo galleries. The content of the published outputs on the
website were governed by the editorial plan and current events. The original project plan included
360 outputs, final bemeficiary had published additional outputs during the project extension period. Final beneficiary had
organized 3 music-discussion evenings and realized 3 workshops for children with focus on
recording and subsequent studio procession of sound and the creation of a short sound
composition.
