Description

Project creates a bridge connecting volunteers from Czech scouting organization, Interpreting of Czech Sign Language students, and deaf and hard of hearing people. Public talks, events and workshops are organized by scouts, students practise interpretation in real life situations and thanks to their collaboration there is an opportunity for deaf people to take part in activities which would otherwise be inaccessible for them. There is a fairly large community of deaf and hard of hearing people in Hradec Králové, as well as sign language interpreters. This project offers an active participation and locals could profit from this unused potential.

Summary of project results

We aimed to help remove some of the barriers between the deaf community and people without hearing impairments.

We aimed to help remove some of the barriers between the deaf community and people without hearing impairments. Through discussions, we were able to bring the lives of

the deaf closer to the public, which is important for potential future encounters with deaf individuals in everyday life. By bringing the deaf into different circles and spaces,

people who had not previously had the opportunity to experience such a situation came into contact with them. These people had the chance to interact with the deaf, which

we believe is important for breaking down prejudices and alleviating fear of an unknown social group.

The greatest benefit from the project was for students of interpreting of sign language and the deaf, who received more opportunities for their development. We also consider

as success that other organizations and even a band, whose concert was interpreted into Czech Sign Language, have shown increased interest in the deaf people. We feel

that we have shown others that it is possible to make a change and there is no need to be afraid. People want to support us in the future and are approaching us with ideas for

collaboration.
