Description
The project aims to protect trees in the city of Jablonec n. Nisou, that are disappearing from the city at a rate of several hundred per year. The goal is to continue to raise the public''s awareness of the importance of trees for the city and the way to get directly involved to protect them.
The project further develops the ongoing activities of the project "Save the trees in the streets", supported by the ACF: participation in administrative proceedings on felling, cooperation with the local nature protection authority, cooperation with arborists, legal consultations, spreading awareness among applicants for felling and the public, involvement of new volunteers in the activities, organization of the 2nd edition of a one-day local Tree Festival.
The main goal is to protect the trees in the city - persuade the authorities and the owners of properties with trees to prioritize a long-term care over felling and, when felling is necessary, to order planting of new trees that would compensate the ecological demage caused adequately. We want to raise awareness among citizens about the importance of trees and the possibilities to get directly involved in their protection; and find at least 1 new colleague for our team.
The project addresses several target groups - citizens who care about trees + visitors of the 2nd Tree festival (will be more informed, activated); owners of the trees – applicants for felling (more informed about benefits of trees and importance of prevention care); environment officers (feedback, improvement of the cooperation, support for their work).
Summary of project results
The project was aimed at further increasing the public''s awareness of the importance of trees and the way to get directly involved to protect the trees in the city of Jablonec n. Nisou. The project further developed the ongoing activities of the project "Save the trees in the streets", supported by the ACF: participation in administrative proceedings on felling, cooperation with the local nature protection authority, cooperation with arborists, legal consultations, spreading awareness among applicants for felling and the public, involvement of new volunteers in the activities, organization of the 2nd edition of a one-day local Tree Festival.
Thanks to the implementation of the project, we were able to partially finance our "tree" activities; we continue to have a well systematized basis for administrative procedures for tree felling and we are able to track down information on a specific tree that someone wants to cut down in a short time (= citizen control over possible illegal felling without proper permission);
At the second Festival of Trees, we provided the public with close contact with trees and their importance, thus promoting the creation of a positive relationship with trees and increasing education - about the importance of trees, the activities of our "tree patrol" and opportunities to get involved in administrative proceedings; As part of our participation in administrative proceedings, we were able to 1. intoduce the tree owners - applicants for felling with the AOPK methodology - a tool for quantifying the value of trees and the ecological damage caused by their felling; 2. increase the scope of the imposed replacement planting for felled trees in terms of the number of newly planted trees, or the tree taxons that can perform as many ecosystem services as possible in a given location (e.g. wherever spatial conditions allow, we have requested planting trees with the potential to grow larger).
