Description

Remote city district Beroun-Hostim lacks stable water supply since 2015. The local inhabitants tried to involve the city of Beroun in solving the problem, unfortunately without any significant success yet. The aim of the project is to get a professional study for possible solutions for water supply and water management, and to increase the public debate towards possible solutions proposed in the study. Measurable goals: Expert assessment of sustainable water management in the landscape around Hostím and multiple variants of drinking water supply. A public lecture and presentation of the plan to the residents and town municipality. Beneficiaries are the citizens of Beroun-Hostim district who will get an evidence-based tool to negotiate with the city of Beroun.

Summary of project results

Since 2015, the inhabitants of Hostím have been struggling with a lack of water in wells - the municipality has no technical infrastructure (water supply, sewerage, gas pipeline) except for electricity, so it is completely dependent on private wells. Moreover, the water in the wells is heavily polluted (due to the lack of sewerage in the local area, intensive farming in the area, etc.), so the inhabitants of Hostím do not have access to drinking water. However, the village is also running out of utility water and the city of Beroun has long refused to address the situation. The inhabitants of Hostím have sought to have an expert opinion drawn up which would outline all the options for the supply of drinking water and sewage disposal in the locality and thus provide the basis for a qualified decision by the city council. However, the city of Beroun refused to have such study prepared and offered no other solution to the current situation. Thanks to the activities associated with this grant and thanks to continuous civic pressure, the town started to consider the building of sewage system in Hostím and had a feasibility study carried out - a root cleaning plant has become one of the options. The project has also helped in the successful continuation of civic activities by which some residents of Hostim try to maintain the community spirit of the village. Residents of Hostim are regularly informed of all activities by email and some of them meet regularly for meetings and public debates.
