Description

Young leaders in selected regions will be trained to work with students in the field of human rights education and media studies, even after the end of the project.
Systematic changes are going to be achieved through both theoretical preparation of future teachers (courses at the faculties of education) and with selected school partners(school policies, curriculum and atmosphere of the school).
The activities will be accompanied by a video campaign on social media. Students will create the campaign themselves along with celebrities and minority representatives who have worked with us long term.

The project will increase respect for dignity and human rights and an active and stable network of trained leaders (including those of vulnerable groups) will be developed in the regions of the Czech Republic. Pupils in Czech schools will be equipped with knowledge and skills in civil and human rights and media education and will have access to quality vocational training and materials for civic education and media education for future teachers.

Summary of project results

The project aimed to tackle multiple challenges:

1. Xenophobia and Intolerance: Rising levels of xenophobia and intolerance towards minorities in Czech society, coupled with a lack of respect for diversity among students and the public.

2. Low Civic Engagement and Human Rights Awareness: Czech students are often lacking civic engagement and knowledge of human rights, leading to feelings of passivity and helplessness.

3. Critical Thinking Skills and Misinformation: There was a deficiency in critical thinking skills among youth, making them susceptible to misinformation and "fake news".

4. Educator Preparedness: Educators lacked preparation to teach media literacy and utilize non-formal education methods effectively.

During the project, we managed to organize 4 Summer academies, during which new regional leaders were trained. Those helped to organize specialised human rights workshops in their regions, which consequently lead to less xenophobia, intolerance and more critical thinking skills alongside higher human rights awareness. We also achieved this goal throughout our mobile app „True Story“ that was designed to tackle these issues well. And reach even those students and regions we couldn’t get to personally with the help of our regional leaders. We also designed a course for universities to prepare young educators-to-be on how to teach media literacy and utilize non formal education methods.

Our project managed to reach 20 070 people, out of which 19 438 were young people/students.  Every year, we had a cohort of students (about 70 %) that claimed that they believed in equal human rights even before the workshop, but we managed to persuade at least 20 % more every year. Which only led to a few students that did not change their minds. We also managed to spread more awareness on human  rights topics among 2000 people that downloaded our True Story App on either iOS or android. We also managed to form new monitoring and leading strategies for Amnesty itself and managed to form a collaboration   with project schools that managed to measure their human rights climate. We also formed a new collaboration with UPOL University for which we designed a special human rights course for new educators that we now hold regularly.
