Description

The objective of the project is to promote the diversion of the stream of hazardous waste generated by households from municipal waste to permitted hazardous waste management facilities for appropriate treatment. This will be achieved through awareness-raising on prevention, re-use and recycling of hazardous waste and increased availability of proper waste collection and handling. The project will provide the necessary equipment for establishing four mobile green units that will collect and manage hazardous waste from municipalities and communities (such as electrical and electronic equipment, batteries, ink cartridges, paints, solvents, lamps, pharmaceuticals etc.).Main activities shall include:

  • purchase of equipment (e.g. mobile units);

  • various awareness-raising actions at a national and local level on waste management;

  • collection and channeling hazardous waste to permitted facilities.

Summary of project results

The aim of the project was to implement the municipal waste management measures, identified under the new Municipal Waste Management Plan 2022-2028 to meet the EU waste management targets and obligations. The project goal was to promote the separate collection and proper management of hazardous waste generated by households, such as small electrical appliances, pesticides, fertilizers, insecticides, lubricants, machine oils, paints, solvents, varnishes, pharmaceutical products and household batteries.

The Key pillars of the Project were:

-Awareness raising of citizens through provision of information about hazardous waste.

-Introduction of good practices for managing hazardous waste through their collection from households with the help of mobile units visiting local authorities.

-Awakening the citizens regarding the need to change the way of managing hazardous waste, which is part of the household waste category, in a more secure manner according to each category according to the various hazardous waste streams.

-Enlightenment about the waste hierarchy, and the right way of sorting and managing hazardous waste produced in households.

For achieving the above key pillars four mobile units for collecting the household hazardous waste were produced within the framework of the project. The aim was to inform the citizens about hazardous waste and to collect it from the households. The mobile units visited a large number of communities and municipalities throughout Cyprus and stayed at each location for 2-5 days. Household hazardous waste that was transferred by citizens to the mobile units was transported to licensed hazardous waste management facilities.

The mobile units visited 135 local authorities (91 communities and 44 municipalities), 17,000 citizens were informed, of which 7,230 were students. In total, 1,681 kg of household hazardous waste was collected, such as pharmaceuticals, printer inks and toners, paints, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides and small electrical and electronic devices.The quantities of household hazardous waste collected amounted to the 5.38% of the total quantities of household hazardous waste collected from the 8 Green Points in Nicosia District for 2023. A communication campaign carried out in the TV, radio stations and projects social media accounts. Also, posters were posted in various parts of the cities. Furthermore, multiple events, such as  radio and television broadcasts and publications of newsletters in the newspapers took place at the municipalities were mobile units visited, in order to spread the information about the project to more citizens.
