Description

The project aims to create sustainable mechanisms for improving the condition and opportunities of people living in marginalized Roma communities through effective integrated approaches. Increasing access of Roma and other vulnerable groups to better services in the following sectors: social assistance, education, employment and health. The implementation of the project activities will create a sustainable coordination mechanism between the target community, local government and regional units of the institutions in the Municipality of Sungurlare and the Municipality of Antonovo. Empowering Roma communities, including Roma women and youth, to actively participate in decision-making processes affecting their lives. The main goal of the activity is to apply opportunities for the formation of such people in the local community, who are interested and empathetic to what is happening in their community, people with their own vision and shared vision for the future of their community, with a sense of responsibility, self-confidence and faith in others, which gives them the attitude to unite and cooperate in the name of common goals. The presence of such people in the Roma community is the best basis for the formation of an active community. Creation and organization of activities of "Family Center" for providing integrated services in 7 settlements on the territory of Sungurlare municipality, incl. the town of Sungurlare, the village of Chubra, the village of Slavyantsi, the village of Grozden, the village of Lozarevo, the village of Valchin, and the village of Vezenkovo. Trainings and seminars for representatives of institutions and local communities to get acquainted with the concepts of discrimination and hate speech, to recognize such manifestations and the opportunities to react and combat them, Information campaigns aimed at representatives of the majority and minorities to prevent and oppose hate speech, radicalization and extremism, including on social media;

Summary of project results

Difficult access of Roma and other vulnerable groups of the population to quality social services, education, employment and healthcare services.
Lack of active members of the community in the social and political life of the towns. Lack of opportunities for Roma women and youth, early marriages, high rates of school drop-outs in Roma communites, manifestation of forms of discrimination. Difficulties in coordination in solving problems in the Roma community, as well as the exchange of information between the community and local institutions regarding the problems of the Roma.

A coordination mechanism was created. Access to social, health and educational services was improved. Vocational trainings was provided. The education of children at risk of dropping out was increased and opportunities were provided for continuing education for dropouts and adults. Children and students were supported in acquiring knowledge and skills in extracurricular activities - music, dance, Bulgarian language, mathematics, etc., through additional training in extracurricular forms.

The building of a family center as well as five training halls were equipped and furnished to provied the services and integreated measures. In addition two children and fitness playgrounds were created. Multidisciplinary team was created - social workers, Roma mediators, teachers, psychologists, a total of 24 people were hired to provide the project measures. Trainings were organized in the areas of empowerment, anti-discrimination, preparation for the labor market, training for parents, healthy living, capacity building of the project team and of employees in the municipalities who work with and for the Roma, numerous information campaigns and activities to get to know and bring the Roma and majority closer together. Support groups for Roma women and support for young people of Roma origin to participate in candidate student fairs.

Vocational training for part of a profession was provided to 18 people. The education of 9 people increased from 3rd to 4th grade. Nine people were literated. 200 children and 80 students were assisted in acquiring knowledge and skills in extracurricular activities - music, dance, Bulgarian language, mathematics, etc., through additional training in extracurricular forms. Traditional folklore costumes were purchased for 100 children and 40 young people. Two youth dance clubs were organized, which participated in festivals, representing Roma culture and traditions. Two children''s and fitness playgrounds were built. Five training halls and one family center were equipped and furnished. Employment was provided for 24 people, mainly Roma as housekeepers for elderly people. Young people of Roma origin participated in candidate student fairs. Trainings were organized to activate young people of Roma origin. Organization of holiday celebrations. 777 people from Roma origin benefited from the integreated measures provided. 1230 people participated in at least one of the 23 informational activities, 1200 people participated in the activites aimed at bringing together the Roma and the majority population.
