Description
Nasekomo AD is a small company, founded in 2017. The company is producing sustainable insect products (insect protein, oil and frass) for the animal feed and agriculture industries. It runs also R&D activities around insect biology and production automation.
The main objective of the project is to increase the company''s competitiveness through development of series of technologies leading to an automated insect multiplication and bioconversion allowing the production at industrial scale of sustainable and environmentally-friendly insect’s proteins. The proteins are to be sold for animal feed, replacing traditional sources of protein such as soy and fish meal that have extensive carbon footprint and whose production depletes natural resources (water, land, forests, wild fish, etc.). The technology will enable the supply of billions of young larvae (neonate) to insect bio conversion units where plant-based waste is processed into high-value insect products such as insect protein, oil and fertilizer.
Summary of project results
Nasekomo''s current products target the animal feed producers and the agriculture industry. The markets was open for insect protein are the aquafeed and pet food markets. The demand for proteins for only these markets is larger than the production capacities of all insect protein producers combined. In the future that demand is projected to only grow reaching €7.2 bn by 2030. This growth is brought about by the need for sustainable and high-quality alternatives to the traditional sources of protein for feed. As from 2021 the new EU legislation has been adopted, allowing insect protein to be used also for feeding in poultry and porcine industries. It will give the opportunity to expand the production and reach new markets.
Through the project, Nasekomo AD simultaneously addressed two seemingly unrelated issues: the need for an alternative sustainable protein source to meet the perpetually growing global protein demand, and the ever increasing amount of food waste.
The company has developed of series of technologies leading to an automated insect multiplication and bioconversion allowing the production at industrial scale of sustainable and environmentally-friendly insect’s proteins. The proteins are to be sold for animal feed, replacing traditional sources of protein such as soy and fish meal that have extensive carbon footprint and whose production depletes natural resources (water, land, forests, wild fish, etc.).
The successful implementation of the project lead to implementation of novel green technologies that will showcase a next-generation approach to food system and food supply in a sustainable and resilient manner. In addition, the project results contributed to a significant enabling effect across the industry value chain which will unlock exponential green impact not only locally, and in the region, but also across EU due to the global market potential of Nasekomo’s solution and will let traditional business operators into the novel green economy.
