Description

The project initiative is based on the need to identify partners with experience in participating in calls for funding projects for the reconstruction and conservation of wetlands habitats. In the context of global warming, wetlands are some of the most vulnerable ecosystems. Wetlands are recognized as centers of high biodiversity, important from a biological , ecological, economic, social and cultural point of view. The project aims to carry out a study visit having the specific purpose of identify common research interests, presenting the experiences and skills gained from previous projects

Summary of the results

The immediate result of the bilateral initiative ''Visit to establish a bilateral partnership between the Agricultural University of Iceland and the Institute of Biology Bucharest''  is the signature of a Letter of intention, by Mrs. Dr. Ragnheiou Inga Þorarinsdottir, as rector of the Agricultural University of Iceland, through which was expressed the interest and the availability to meet and discus the possibility to collaborate with the Institute of Biology Bucharest in future research projects , targeting the field of Ecosystem and Biodiversity.

Other important project results are:

- Establishing a valuable contact with Prof. Hlynur Oskarsson, identifying common research interests on the theme of restoring wetland ecosystems, with immediate focus on peatlands areas;

- presenting main results obtained in projects implemented by IBB, as Project Promoter, in consortium/ collaboration with Norwegian partner NINA, targeting areas of humid ecosystems.  Upon discussion, the idea of a research project regarding a comparative analysis of carbon dynamics in restored peatlands ecosystems in Romania, and similar ones in Iceland, was outlined.

- field trips and visits to peatland sites to identify in situ the main differences between the equivalent sites in Iceland and Romania, data and in formation that can constitute a first basis of documentation for the development of joint research projects.
