Description

The main goal of the initiative is to assess the potential for sustainable biomass usage in the Romanian energy sector and the enablers, respectively disablers of this primary energy source in achieving the sector''s decarbonization and competitiveness goals. A key consideration will be given to pathways for ensuring that the usage of biomass for the energy sector does not hamper biodiversity conservation goals.

The objectives that fall under this goal and which is intended to pursue within this bilateral research and stakeholder engagement project are the following: to analyze the options

Summary of the results

The aim of the bilateral project was the technical-economic, as well as the legal substantiation, as well as from the perspective of public and political acceptability of potential public and private investments for the use of biomass in energy. The project started from a specific technology, developed mainly by Norwegian companies, namely black pellet technology.
Unfortunately, shortly after the start of the project, due to the strict regulations regarding the sustainability criteria for the use of biomass, as well as the lack of availability of forest biomass due to the over-dependence of the countryside for firewood, it became clear that this technology has limited feasibility in Romania. In this context, the energy research and development started within the project was expanded with the examination of the potential of biomass in general, not only the specific technology of black pellets and especially the biomass from the agricultural sector and resulting from the crops of energy plants.
