Description

The focus of this bilateral initiative is the numerical modelling of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWT). However, FOWTs are complex nonlinear systems, with a coupled hydro-aero-structural response, which is difficult to model in a cost-efficient optimization process.

The objectives of this BI are: (1) to increase the knowledge on numerical simulations of FOWTs; (2) to disseminate this knowledge; and (3) to involve additional partners to pre-form a consortium on this topic.

An interim exchange of staff from Blue Ocean Sustainable Solutions to SINTEF Ocean will be organised to discuss progress

Summary of the results

The bilateral iniciative OC2_49 Floating Offshore Wind Modelling Cooperation, between the Portuguese ocean sustainability startup blueOASIS, and the leading offshore research center Sintef Ocean, has focused on advancing the use of high-fidelity modelling tools to better understand the aerodynamics of floating offshore wind turbines. The project started with a technical staff exchange, where 2 blueOASIS researchers where welcomed to the Sintef Ocean facilities for one week. The work developed within this grant resulted in one scientific conference publication, with two additional scientific publications currently under review/preparation. A final workshop was organized in Ericeira, Portugal where both institutions shared the details of the work carried out with the audience, and concluded that to further pursue this work, the partners would join the international project Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration -OC7, led by the United States National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), under the International Energy Agency (IEA) Wind Task 30.
