Summary of the results
The seaweed production industries in Norway and Portugal are both expanding but differ significantly in scale, development, and strategic focus. Norway’s industry is more mature and large-scale, primarily centered on kelp cultivation and wild harvesting to supply markets such as biofuels, animal feed, and bioplastics. In 2022, Norwegian production reached approximately 200,000 tonnes.
In contrast, Portugal''s seaweed sector remains smaller and more artisanal, emphasizing sustainable aquaculture and native species like Saccharina latissima and Ulva. Annual production remains below 10,000 tonnes, with a focus on high-value sectors such as food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. This contrast reflects distinct economic approaches: Norway’s industrial-scale production versus Portugal’s niche market orientation.
This initiative enabled a comparative analysis of both countries'' seaweed sectors, identifying achievements and challenges in Norway and opportunities for Portugal. By examining these differences, the project aims to propose a roadmap for sustainable seaweed farming along European coastlines, building on the experiences of both nations to reduce economic and social disparities.
As an ongoing effort, this collaboration has laid the foundation for a future scientific research proposal. It has also sparked new perspectives and strengthened the partnership between the research teams, fostering potential for further joint initiatives and knowledge exchange.
