Description

The bilateral initiative aims to develop a set of research practices in both countries, regarding the influence of velocity-controlled strength training (VCST) on functional capacity in institutionalized older adults. To achieve the proposed objective, 4 joint activities were defined with the aim to identify the load-velocity relationship in older women and men in the horizontal leg-press exercise; analyse the acute effects of different protocols of VCST on functional capacity in older adults; compare the chronic adaptations of different VCST approaches on functional capacity in older adults

Summary of the results

Our bilateral initiative aimed to strengthen the relationships between the University of Beira Interior and Nord University by developing innovative training programs for older adults in both countries. By sharing similar work practices, the primary purpose of this bilateral relationship was to optimize the training prescription for the older population to increase the training programs'' efficacy in improving their functional capacity. In addition, we also aimed to provide new opportunities for Sport Sciences students to increase their knowledge in the scientific and practical field of exercise with older adults. Therefore, we believe that the bilateral relationship increased the scientific knowledge in this area.
