Description

The Serra Henriques Foundation (FSH) signed a memorandum with Infraestruturas de Portugal Património (IPP) for the elaboration of proposals regarding the intervention of deactivated railway stations, which are all buildings of historical and cultural interest. IPP trusted the FSH with the cooperation with architecture faculties and both national and international partners to study together solutions of sustainable and strategic character. The FSH hosted this initiative within its study group. This proposal has the objective of congregating in a single work group the Portuguese and Norwegian

Summary of the results

NEWWAYS initiative, part of a collaboration between FSH and IPP, brought together Portuguese and Norwegian architecture schools for studying the reactivation of a scattered cultural and isolated heritage. We expected the introduction of the subject in architecture school’s curriculum, aiming to gather academic research groups to present strategic and sustainable proposals, capable of earning the support of investors and local governments.
The partners BAS and ISCTE, both well-known architecture schools had a key role during the several working sessions, helping to define the large extent of the challenge. Their idea to set a priority list and a pilot project in Montjo was particularly relevant to arrive to results.
BAS adapted the initiative in their own context introducing the study of the deactivated railway buildings in Norway, while ISCTE further developed proposals for Montijo.
Alongside this pilot project we developed a booklet presenting IPP priority list and a promotional video, both used as tools to create awareness about the project, hoping that the next schools and municipalities will follow.

Intervention upon these buildings constitutes a strong boost for the development of peripheral and deserted territories, mitigating social and economic disparities. Inspired by the participation in this initiative BAS, our Norwegian partner, introduced the same subject in their school, bringing our two countries in a close relation to find solutions for a common problem.
