The debate about territorial sustainability needs to become a priority in political agendas, focusing on finding solutions within the framework of sustainability which work with and for the environment, instead of going against it.
2020 warrants the revision of municipal masterplans in Portugal. The use of environmental sustainability indicators in spatial planning at local level is fragile in Portugal.

Statistical significant reduction of food waste; Increase the territorial resistance to climate change and benefit the quality of life of citizens and visitors; Attract new investments, guided by principles of environmental responsibility and social justice; Harmonize the needs of the local population (leisure, sports, culture, education, economy, and health) with the protection, recovery, and enhancement of natural assets; Promoted the county''s natural heritage to residents and visitors, who are already looking for this product in the municipal tourism sector; Total restoration of 14 hectares of degraded forest; Creation of 4 ponds for wildlife; Restoration of a water course; Planting of more than 2,000 trees and shrubs; Creation of an educational service; Training of technicians in environmental restoration and sustainable forest management; Attracting the public to local services; Supporting local small businesses.
Two in one. Two training courses, one in Portugal and one in Norway, empowered local educators and policymakers to develop good practice in environmentally responsible and socially equitable spatial planning by sharing practical, eminently practical knowledge and useful resources. Environment and spatial planning at the local scale was the priority.
