Description
Coastal ecosystems provide a variety of ecosystem services to humankind such as natural resources (seaweed, fish, shellfish), water purification, carbon sequestration, and coastal protection from waves.
CIIMAR has been developing since July 2018 an innovative research on the use of aerial images for mapping coastal ecosystems and assessing seaweed standing stocks, under the scope of the project-SWUAV: Mapping the intertidal zone and assessing seaweed biomass using UAV images. NIVA is also leading an initiative on this subject: Seabee - a Norwegian Infrastructure for drone-base research
Summary of the results
Following the results-based management approach, the bilateral initiative proposed to develop a set of activities aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Portuguese and Norwegian scientists, through the exchange of experiences and knowledge, in remote sensing techniques using unmanned aerial vehicles, applied to the mapping of coastal biological communities, in order to accelerate the development of new methods and tools for aerial image classification.
The consolidation of the partnership between the Promoter and Partner bodies has made it possible to develop new instruments, which facilitate the planning and implementation of missions for environmental and biological monitoring missions of coastal zones, using drones, as well as also, to disseminate the acquired knowledge to the scientific community and stakeholders involved in coastal resource management.
