In the Maltese context, the barriers that hinder moving towards public spaces which contribute towards sustainable development can be organised under three main themes: socio-cultural; lack of resources and inadequacies relating to planning and governance. Grass roots initiatives are needed to transform public spaces, but these are characterised by fragmentation. A more collaborative approach is advocated to reinforce the role of spatial planning in facilitating the potential for urban open spaces for sustainable development. Summary of the results
In this project Dawra Madwarna teamed up with Fragment, an urban design firm based in Oslo, to share their experience and knowledge on placemaking and community projects. A two-day Placemaking Knowledge Exchange Workshop was held for architects, planning and design professionals, local councillors, active citizen groups and students from the Faculty for the Built Environment at the University of Malta.
