Description

Experts involved from different Icelandic institutions:

  • Icelandic Institute of Natural History (main organizer from Iceland, different reseach and projects)
  • Southwest Iceland Research Centre (incl alien species invasion centre, monitoring of harbour)
  • West Iceland Research Center (Action and research projects on alien species)
  • Environment Agency (Water directive, activities against alien species)
  • Uni

Summary of the results

During the study visit, the officials of the Ministry of Climate, Environmental Investment Centre, Environmental Board, Environmental Agency employees and employees of EEA Grants alien species projects from the University of Tartu and Estonian University of Life Sciences, learned how the monitoring and control of alien species is organized in Iceland''s different municipalities, at the state level, and which solutions are used in different municipalities for different species and in different environmental conditions (incl involvement methods, outreach, monitoring methods and control methods).
Participants who are responsible for monitoring activities, got useful ideas and contacts for new technical solutions for presenting environmental information more attractively to the public.

Estonian experts had opportunity to draw useful conclusions from Icelandic alien species management and the results of it. The obtained contacts can be used in future cooperation projects.
It is planned to analyze the introduced cheaper methods for monitoring marine alien species, in order to expand the monitoring of alien species in to some Estonian ports, including small ports.
Estonians shared also some contacts that are useful for Icelandic organisations, e.g. to popularize the flounder.

Information on the projects funded by the EEA and Norway Grants is provided by the Programme and Fund Operators in the Beneficiary States, who are responsible for the completeness and accuracy of this information.
