Description

The proposed bilateral initiative establishes a collaborative platform for BUT and USN to share mutual knowledge in the field of structural safety and reliability. The platform should allow the experts of both partners to exchange ideas, experience, research papers, software and should eventually lead to increase of expertise in the field of mutual interest.

Summary of the results

Within the framework of the initiative, conditions were created for the establishment of professional cooperation, mutual knowledge sharing and professional discussion on the issues of reliability and sustainability of civil engineering and marine structures. Both parties have expressed interest in collaborating on the application of physics-based and data-driven surrogate models to computationally demanding reliability and durability analyses of engineering structures. The combined knowledge of the two institutions will help in the revision of existing code recommendations on design values for reliability and durability of wind turbines and the application of the forthcoming Model Code 2020. There is also interest in cooperation in the field of experimental testing and inverse analysis for the determination of material parameters including their uncertainties. In addition to research topics, possibilities of cooperation in the field of student and researcher exchange were also discussed. The next step will be to compare the content of the undergraduate courses and to select a suitable time frame with regard to the continuity of the studies and the preparation of the final theses.

Both institutions actively collaborated to achieve aims of the initiative. Three experts from both universities participated at seminars in the Czech Republic and Norway. Cooperation between all participants went smoothly. This created a good basis for further cooperation.
