Summary of the results

The original goal, to write a concise textbook on polar ecology focused on specific examples from Svalbard and illustrated primarily with pictorial documentation created during polar ecology courses, was achieved. The Polar Ecology of Svalbard, University textbook is multidisciplinary bilingual (Czech and English) book prepared by team of researchers working in Svalbard for last more than 20 years. The book has been prepared for Czech, Norwegian and international students who are interested in polar ecology. The foreword was kindly written by the Norwegian ambassador to the Czech Republic. The main text was introduced by both editors. Prof. Elster In 10 pages, characterized Svalbard as a scientific laboratory, where intensive research of arctic nature is taking place. On the next 10 pages together with prof. Elingsen introduces readers to university studies in Svalbard.

Bilateral cooperation with Norway has been applied during all phases of the work. From UNIS (the University Centre in Longyearbyen) we have obtained support (former director of UNIS prof. Herald Ellingsen). On base of original agreement the book is introducing the university education of Arctic Ecology given by the UNIS and the Centre for Polar Ecology (CPE), University of South Bohemia professors and teachers.

We believe that the book is informing about the Czech and Norway Arctic education and science and both research teams (the UNIS and CPE) are ready for fruitful collaboration in close future.
