Description
The funded activities will include the organization and initiation of the project, travel expenses for knowledge transfer and meetings between involved partners.
A collaboration with the Department of Clinical and Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology will enhance research activities, innovation capacity and integration of new knowledge in the area of cancer. In more detail, Dr. Røe, a consultant oncologist at the Cancer Clinic, Levanger Hospital, is mainly interested in a combination of clinical and basic cancer
Summary of the results
The project was a collaboration between the Karaiskakio Foundation (KF), Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center (BOCOC) in Cyprus and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Norway. The aim of the project was the identification of genetic factors associated with mesothelioma (MM), following environmental, household, or occupational asbestos exposure. For this, data from the Cyprus Cancer Registry between 1999-2019 was obtained and an increasing trend in mesothelioma incidence was observed, with a male to female ratio of about 3:1. Geographical maps were constructed indicating the clusters of mesothelioma incidence in Cyprus. Finally, Next Generation Sequencing and advanced genomic studies were performed for the attempt to identify genetic factors associated with mesothelioma. The partners presented the results at the 16th International Conference of the International Mesothelioma Interest Group (iMig 2023) in June 2023.
