Beneficiary state: Slovakia Programme: Local and Regional Initiatives to Reduce National Inequalities and to Promote Social Inclusion Programme number: SK04 Project title: Innovative education for teaching staff of primary schools to increase their intercultural competences in the educational process of Roma pupils Summary: The main objective of the innovative education is to train the teaching staff of primary schools in order to be able to use Romani language as a supportive language in schooling process as well as teaching methods promoting intercultural and inclusive education. In the course of this project some textbooks for students and teaching material for teachers will be developed and published. The specific project objectives are: a) to improve the professional competence of the teaching staff through innovative education, b) to enhance the competence of the teaching staff in the field of Roma culture and history, c) to support the schools in creating favourable school environment, d) to provide an expert advice to schools in the field of a school curriculum focusing on intercultural and inclusive education

Summary of project results

Project objectives were met and also this project managed to develop bilateral cooperation between Slovak and donor countries, Norway. The project is seen as an international project and offered an opportunity to raise awareness about the EEA and Norway grants and increasing interest in addressing the needs of Roma in the context of their social inclusion. The project was designed for the teaching staff of primary schools (for teachers, teacher assistants, tutors), the experts in teaching practice. The project was characterized by the idea of ​​"Together with Roma people achieve more", Roma teachers were the lecturers, participated in the creation of textbooks, were among the participants in innovative education, study visits, training in the Romany language. The project therefore perceived as an open - inclusive. The Implementation of the project was carried out according to a timetable without the risk. Objectives and results of the project have been met. The outputs of the project were implemented on time. Professional website project was fully secured. The Organization and the economics of the project was seamless. The project had positive feedback at home and abroad. The project had a positive impact in 20 primary schools in different regions of Slovakia. The project allowed to teachers to acquire and improve professional competence in the field of education of Roma and innovate approaches in the context of intercultural education. The project developed bilateral cooperation between the Slovak Republic and Norway. The project has reached international level.

Summary of bilateral results

Project activity "study visit" to strengthened the bilateral cooperation between the Slovak Republic and Norway. It was managed during the project to establish cooperation with the international organization Nansen Academy for Peace and Dialogue through recommendations of representatives of the European Wergeland Center. Together 30 teachers directly in Lillehammer attended educational training, which aimed to promote and improve their competence in the field of multicultural and intercultural education in primary schools with pupils from Roma communities. Participants of the study visit through the teaching practices in schools of Lillehammer and Osle familiar got known the Norwegian educational system and integration approaches,within the workshops they were looking for the answers to the question How to be a good teacher ?, What is intercultural competence? and jointly they were finding the solutions to everyday problems in the education of students in a multicultural environment. Within this activity, the contacts were established as well the institutional cooperation was developed, which is the basis for further international / bilateral cooperation in the fields of education pilot projects of students of Roma communities and social inclusion in school and non-school environment
