Summary of project results

Children are among the most vulnerable group, at a very early age in contact with manifestations of intolerance, discrimination or rejection by the non-Roma schoolmates and often teachers. This creates prejudices, but which are also reversible. Often the mutual antagonism occurs even though without any reason. It is therefore necessary to share these facts among children and lead them to mutual tolerance and understanding. The main idea of the project was to spread the spirit of tolerance, acceptance and understanding of other cultures and otherness among pupils of primary schools workshops and discussions. Also, we aimed at arousing a sort of a sense of pride about their culture and origin among pupils of Roma origin. We tried to motivate them and to build their confidence in order to achieve higher personal goals. Our project helped pave the way for an effective change in attitudes towards students, building of mutual tolerance and mutual knowledge between pupils of Roma and non-Roma descent. The target group of the project were Roma and non-Roma children and youth aged 6-15. Eight primary schools were pre-selected for the project implementation. These schools were selected on the basis of proportional representation of Roma and non-Roma pupils. It is in such schools that discrimination, prejudice and many times hatred is manifested by pupils from both groups. In each school, depending on its size, 50 to 200 children and teachers participated in the project.
